One of the University of Wyoming’s bus shelters blew roughly 20 feet from its original position at 30th Street and Willett Drive because of high winds sometime between 2 and 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.
UW Associate Vice President for Administrative Operations Mark Collins said the shelter blew over because the winds were in excess of 60 mph and the shelter had recently been moved to prepare for a new shelter to replace it. Collins said the university had planned to replace two shelters in the Express parking lot and were preparing to install the new shelters when the high winds caught them by surprise.
Collins said the new shelters, which will be heated, required new concrete foundations to be poured because utility lines had to be placed. Since new foundations were required, the university moved two shelters, including the one that blew over, and secured them with sandbags and other weighted materials. Collins said the new shelters will be larger than the current ones.
“The new shelters are on order with the company, and we hope they will be fully installed by late spring this semester,” he said.
Collins said the other shelters that were moved have been additionally reinforced to prepare for any more high winds.
