Senator wants student input about having a wet stadium.
Last week at the regular meeting of the Associated Students of the University of Wyoming Senate, a resolution was presented encouraging the sale of malt beverages at home football and basketball games.
This isn’t a new topic on campus and a wet stadium and arena are often requests made to those campaigning for the ASUW Presidency and Senate seats. However I feel the true student opinion is not quite so cut and dry on this issue.
I’m not arguing that consumption of alcohol is bad. When it’s done responsibly it is as much a personal choice as what clothes you wear and sports teams you support. Irresponsible consumption is not a personal choice, however, as it affects those around you. Efforts are being made in the ASUW Senate to find citation information that illustrates the current irresponsible use of alcohol at football games, but more important than this is the opinion of the students.
Are you comfortable with allowing the sale and consumption of alcohol at football and basketball games? Do you believe the rates of underage consumption and disorderly conduct will increase or decrease with legalization? Would the availability of malt beverages in the stadium and arena prevent you or your friends from sneaking in containers of hard liquor or ‘pre-gaming’ to a degree of irresponsibility?
Your opinions will be extremely helpful in the coming debate on this resolution. Please contact the senators from your college with any thoughts or ideas you have about how we should proceed.
Our e-mail addresses can be found on the UW website and letters to the whole senate can always be dropped off at the ASUW Offices in the basement of the Wyoming Union, Room 20.
