ASUW awarded LDSSA $8,170 after deliberation on whether the event should be hosted on campus. University of Wyoming policy dictates that ASUW-funded events should be held on campus unless there are extenuating circumstances. Debate ensued on whether the UW Conference Center, which operates in conjunction with the Hilton Garden Inn, is technically on campus.
Problems arose when the LDSSA, which is planning the event for its seventh year, had already signed a nonrefundable $5,750 contract with the UW Conference Center. If ASUW voted to require the event be held in a more central location, such as the Union Ballroom, LDSSA would still be responsible for paying the contract amount.
“We felt it wasn’t going to be an issue because we’ve held it there four years past,” said LDSSA President Amber Savage.
Savage presented several options to ASUW. One option was the original proposal for the UW Conference Center as both the venue and catering. A second option was for the Union Ballroom venue and UW Conference Center catering. The difference to these two most viable options is only $250.
ASUW first voted to remove the stipulation that the event be held on campus. The award amount was changed to $8,170 to allow the LDSSA more options in planning its event. ASUW will have around $1,500 returned after the event from ticket sales.
According to College of Business Senator Phil Abernathy, “this is fifth time ever students have taken the time to find out how to get in touch with those who are voting on this issue. Abernathy and several other senators said they received many emails in favor of the awarding the funds.
