Laramie man arrested in thefts from unlocked cars

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Police in Laramie say a 21-year-old man was able to steal iPods, laptops and even a gun from cars simply by opening unlocked doors.

Robert Akin Simpson of Laramie was arrested Thursday and on Friday police issued a warning to residents to keep their vehicles locked and make sure expensive, easily stolen items are kept out of view.

Police said Simpson was arrested after a backpack with stolen items was found. Commander Mitchell Cushman said an investigation then led to the discovery of other stolen items, including a car, drug paraphernalia and the gun.

He said Simpson is accused of entering up to 30 cars a night over a two-month period looking for cash and items to sell.

He was being held in the Albany County jail and doesn’t have a lawyer yet.
