Admission standards for the University of Wyoming are expected to change in the fall semester of 2013 Vice President of Special Projects Carol Frost said. With student government now supporting the proposed admission standards, the board of trustees can move forward, but raising the bar for admittance is not to weed out poor students, it is to improve retention and graduation rates and offer a more personalized experience to students, Frost said.

Only 53 percent of UW students receive a bachelor’s degree within 6 years, Frost said. She also said, only 40 percent of Wyoming high school graduates will go to college. Frost said there is need for improvement.
According to the Academic affairs website only 36 percent of Wyoming’s residence have an associate’s degree or better. But the demand for postsecondary education in the job market is expected to rise to 63 percent in 2018. Frost said this is a good reason to increase the graduation rate at the University of Wyoming.
Frost said preparation, financial situations, and transition into college life are three factors that dictate whether a student drops out or stays in school.
Preparation for college should start in high school and one way to help students prepare is to set the Hathaway Success Curriculum as the new UW admission standard. 80 percent of students said they would have worked harder if their high schools would have demanded more from them, Frost added.
The Hathaway Success Curriculum was passed by the state legislature in 2006. 90 percent of high school graduates who were admitted in August already met the Hathaway Success Curriculum, but the 10 percent who do not meet the requirements can still be admitted under conditional standards, Frost said.
Conditionally admitted students will have to enter the Synergy program, Frost said. Synergy is a program that helps students simultaneously integrate into college life and take courses in smaller class sizes. Although the classes are smaller and instructors are specially trained, they are the exact same classes any freshmen would take their first year of college, Frost said.
Synergy is for students with a GPA of 2.74–2.50 regardless of ACT scores, or students with a GPA of 2.25–2.49 with a minimum ACT score of 20. Non-Wyoming high school graduates can be conditionally admitted if they have a GPA 2.50–2.99 with a minimum ACT score of 20.
Frost said if the board of trustees approves the proposed admission standards Synergy will have to expand to accommodate the incoming students. She added Synergy would have to double in size or new similar programs would have to be designed.
ASUW Sens. Alex Brink and Jaryd Unangst had concerns of the effectiveness of a revised version of Synergy. Unangst said he would like to see a revised version of the Synergy program before admission standards are changed. But ASUW voted to support a change in admission standards Tuesday night and approval of the new standards is on the board of trustee’s agenda on Friday.
