Scripture cannot justify homophobia


People should not pick and choose verses for agenda.

Homosexuality is a touchy subject in American society. Nearly everyone has some opinion on the issue. Some believe everyone should be able to marry regardless of sexual orientation. Others believe that gay marriage is a sin.

Why do people believe that? Because the Bible says so. 

It is true. Leviticus 20:13 reads, “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.” 

What bothers me is when some Christians pick and choose verses in order to fit their agenda and not follow everything the Bible says. 

For example, Exodus 35:2 reads, “Six days work shall be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on it shall be put to death.” Have you ever worked on a Sunday? According to the Bible, it is as much of a sin as being gay. 

Or Deuteronomy 22:5, which claims, “Woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God.” So for all of the women who have worn jeans and a T-shirt or guys who have worn dressed up as a girl for Halloween, sorry, they are going to hell. 

How about 1 Timothy 2:12 where Paul said, “I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.” According to the Bible, students should not listen to all those female professors they have. What do they know? They only have a doctorate.

Now, I am not saying that the Bible is a total sham. I think it is a great thing. It is arguably one of the most important and influential books in existence. It has given us laws and morals that most of us live by today. It gives many people strength and courage to lead great lives.

But as a Christian, a person cannot pick and choose which laws to follow. If one follows one verse for a certain agenda, one should follow the rest of them in the same way. I do not think that it is moral to pick one verse to discriminate one group of people and just say to hell with the rest. 

If one is a Christian, be a Christian. However, don’t abuse Holy Scripture in order to justify homophobia.
