‘Afropolitan Fusion’ band Soulfege performs

By

The Student Activities Council will present a night of funky three-piece harmonies with a hip-hop reggae mix at Thursday night’s concert Soulfège.

The show begins at 8 p.m. on tonight in the Wyoming Union Ballroom.
Soulfège (pronounced sOl-fezh) is a six-piece, three-vocalist self-proclaimed “Afropolitan Fusion” band from Los Angeles.

“We wanted the performers to be outside of the box of the typical keynote speaker, minus the podium,” Program Advisor Michael Lange said.

As part of Martin Luther King, Jr. week, the council decided to bring in artists who were able to discuss the academia of politics in a more entertaining way.

Soulfège has been rocking crowds with driving rhythms and powerful lyrics since 2003, according to its official Web site.

The band has been nominated for several awards, including the Boston Music Award and the 2005 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, according to its Web site.

Currently, the group operates under the independent label “Left Turn Music,” which was launched in 2006.

Soulfège is a critically-acclaimed “Global Urban Fusion band” whose music has aired on major media airwaves such as MTV Africa, NPR and BBC Worldservice.

The members of Soulfège say they stand for more than the typical reggae band.

“We are artists; we speak from the soul and we rep for more than money and misogyny. We are poets, lyricists, instrumentalists, scientists of sound and thought. We trade in ideas, not idiocy.”

They have been heralded by the Boston Globe as “a fusion of thumping African music and rhythms, sweet reggae breezes, funk and hip-hop - but also with their message.”
The group members are also founders of “Take Back the Mic,” an international youth cultural movement.

They advocate to utilize the hip-hop movement to help spread ideas of empowerment and civic action to American youth.
