The first winner of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” Dat Phan, will perform in the Arts and Sciences Auditorium on Friday, Jan. 25.
The Asian American Pacific Islander Student Association (AAPISA)is organizing the comedy show . It will be one of the final events of Days of Dialogue.
The doors will open at 6 p.m., and the show will begin at 7 p.m.
In addition to performing around the country, Phan has appeared in both television and film since his reality show victory in 2003. His appearances include “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” Comedy Central, and the movie “Cellular.”
AAPISA’s Vice President Natasha Dirck said the association chose Phan over other comedians because they want to promote Asian awareness.
“He talks about the status quo and growing up Asian,” she said.
Phan’s comedy addresses the aspects of Asian culture and stereotypes that are so ingrained in American culture that everyone can relate to it, Dirck said.
“That’s why we’re included in Days of Dialogue. They are issues that put on a different spin and make people think,” Dirck said.
Phan is a Vietnamese-born American who grew up in San Diego. He runs his own production company, Dat Phan Productions, along with his MySpace page. His official Web site is www.datphan.com.
After his performance, Phan will hold a workshop for students interested in learning about Asian-American stereotypes.
