If you are going to retire you might as well retire in Laramie, or, according to Money Magazine’s Donna Rosato, one of the top-five places to retire in the United States.

Rosato spoke Monday on NBC’s Today show about the best places to retire within the U.S., and Laramie topped the magazine’s 2011 list for those who fear taxes.

Rosato told the Today Show her magazine judged on five criteria this year.

They were state income tax, sales tax, median property tax, median home price, state bond rating and budget shortfall.

Chamber of Commerce Director Gordon Crow said he felt these points were only the tip of the iceberg.

“What Laramie really has to offer lies below,” Crow said.

Crow also mentioned the great quality of life in the city and attributed it to the surrounding wilderness areas.

“We have room to grow without negatively impacting the surrounding environment,” he added.

On Today, Rosato said the university definitely enhanced the draw to Laramie for retirees as it enabled them to attend classes. Crow agreed, adding, “The university is a wonderful anchor to have.”

Crow described the Money Magazine feature as accurate.

”It [the article] says Laramie is doing things right.”
