Up to 100 bikes are stolen on average every academic year on campus. One student said she was surprised when she found out her bike was one of them. Art major Katie Giroux smiled as she described her bike that was recently stolen; she said she loved it. “It was hand-painted and watermelon pink with a green basket on the back,” she said. Giroux left it locked up over the summer. When she returned to attend summer classes she looked for the bike, but it wasn’t where she left it. Giroux said she was aware of the university’s policy to remove bikes left from previous semesters, so she started checking with the campus police. Then came the good news; the campus police remembered her bike. But then came the bad news; they remembered it very well as it stuck out from the rest. They did go to remove it per campus policy. However, it was already gone, green basket and all, before they got there. This was terrible news, Giroux said. But it wasn’t the first time she had received it. In fact, two years ago she had a previous bike stolen on campus. “It had a horn and tassels,” Giroux recounted. She also painted it bright pink and designed it as well. Giroux said all she could do now is make another one, unless the missing bike is found. On one hand, she said she is positive she will recognize it, if it were to ever stroll by. On the other hand, she neglected to register it, which could’ve helped recover it. Either way, it’s back to the drawing board for Giroux. Email: |
