Movie highlights skiing on coldest days of year

Winter sports enthusiasts have it all – the chance to ski or board on some of the biggest and most renowned mountains all over the world, high-quality gear in a variety of shapes and sizes and Warren Miller.

Miller’s latest action film, “Children of Winter,” will debut at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Arts & Sciences Auditorium.

A prominent American sports filmmaker, Miller has made a film every year since 1950. His latest addition is narrated by Jonny Moseley, a man synonymous with the slopes.

Miller started his filming tradition as early as 1946, when he filmed a friend skiing and surfing and then showed the films to other friends, commenting on performances.

“All of a sudden, I was being asked to free tuna casserole dinners if I’d bring my projector and show the films,” Miller said in his autobiographical section on his Web site, www.warrenmiller.net.

From that, his filmmaking career exploded. Free casserole became paying attendants in the audience.

Known for his witty narration, Miller highlights Olympians and celebrity athletes alike.

Warren Miller Entertainment was founded in 1949 and produces and promotes his films.

“Children of Winter” showcases such global destinations as Iceland, Japan and Austria, with some local favorites including Steamboat, Colo. and Utah. Olympic gold medalist Seth Westcott stars in the film, as well as Gerry Lopez.

“When it’s cold and snowing, others run inside. But skiers and snowboarders do the opposite, no matter how cold we are,” Max Bervy, the director and producer, said in a University of Wyoming news release. “We are all the children of winter, and if you ski or ride, this movie reaffirms what we all know, that we’re lucky to know the shortest, coldest days of the year.”

The company has since been sold to Time Warner by Miller’s son, and Miller said in his autobiography that although the company still assumes his name, it isn’t his film.
