As the semester winds down, the Intramural Sports program at the University of Wyoming follows suit. The fall semester was a successful one for the program, reaching the highest participation the program has seen in years. “We had the largest number of teams ever in our volleyball leagues and 3-on-3 basketball leagues,” Intramural Sports Coordinator Joe Book said. “I think we had over 2,700 participants. It’s a great turnout across the board for all our events.” Book said the biggest sports of the fall semester were flag football, soccer and the basketball and volleyball leagues. The softball program is growing as well. With the fall semester behind, the Intramural Program now faces the upcoming spring. “Our biggest event in the spring is basketball,” Book said. “We’ll have anywhere from 100 to 150 teams.” Book said some unique events highlight the spring calendar. Undefeated Cowboys take on Boise State

For the first time in the last decade, the Wyoming Cowboy basketball team is undefeated after their first five games of the season. After a pair of close victories over two “quality” opponents in Texas State and Denver, the Cowboys are off to a 5-0 start under second-year coach Heath Schroyer. “We’ve grown as a team these first five games,” Schroyer said. “We still have weaknesses, no doubt, but I believe this team will continue to get better.” If Schroyer’s team maintains their winning ways and improves as the season goes on, the Pokes may be destined for a postseason trip earlier than expected in Schroyer’s plan. The last time a Wyoming team began 5-0 was in 1997-98; a team that ended up winning 19 games and earned a berth in the National Invitational Tournament. After a one-point victory over the Bobcats of Texas State last Wednesday, the Cowboys are on their way to what many hope to be a successful season. “[Texas State is] a good team, and I give them a lot of credit,” Schroyer said. “It was a good win for us.” Write comment (0 Comments)

Cowgirls have little to be thankful for this holiday

The Cowgirl basketball team didn’t rest over the recent Thanksgiving break. In fact, the squad has been busy since the University of Wyoming offices closed Tuesday evening. On Nov. 25, Wyoming hosted the Boise State Broncos and walked away with their third victory, a 62-55 defeat over the Broncos from the west. The action continued on Saturday, when the Cowgirls traveled to Eugene, Ore. They suffered a loss against the Oregon Ducks, 51-45. Wyoming faced a 15-point deficit in the first half of the BSU match, which they overcame to secure a win. Write comment (0 Comments)

Cowgirl volleyball ends season with road losses

The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team (5-20 overall, 4-12 in the Mountain West Conference) ended their season with two losses against schools from the state of Utah. The Cowgirls played their final two season matches against the University of Utah on Nov. 20 and Brigham Young on Nov. 22. Both BYU (14-12 overall, 7-9 in the MWC) and Utah (22-5, 14-2 MWC) beat the Cowgirls in three straight sets. In Salt Lake City, the Utes swept the Cowgirls 25-16, 25-20 and 25-17 in three sets. The Utes held a huge advantage at the net, which contributed to the win over Wyoming. Utah out-blocked Wyoming 23-12, and had a hitting percentage of 31 percent to the Cowgirl’s 10 percent. Wyoming Grapplers Enjoy Success in Nebraska

The University of Wyoming wrestling program competed in the Kaufman-Brand Open in Omaha, Neb. this weekend, where every Cowboy gained experience.

The team continued their campaign by placing six Cowboys in the top four of their respective weight classes and divisions.

UW’s young wrestlers contributed to the team’s success. All six Cowboy grapplers placing in the top-four were first- or second-year athletes.

Placing second in the Elite Division’s 125-pound class was redshirt freshman Michael Martinez. He defeated both Trent Sprenkle of North Dakota State and Terance Young of Northern Iowa to reach the finals.

In the finals, Martinez lost to No. 19 Zach Sanders by 9-7 to earn him the runner-up position. Martinez’s season record is now 13-2.

Fellow redshirt freshman Joe LeBlanc placed third, competing in the Elite Division’s 184-pound class.

After losing his opening bout, LeBlanc won four to end the tournament with a mark of 4-1. He took third place by a score of 7-4 against Nebraska’s Levi Wofford, improving his season record to 15-2.

Redshirt freshman Shane Onufer placed fourth in his Elite Division bracket at 174 pounds. He went 3-2 at the tournament and is now 16-2 on the season.

Also placing fourth for the Cowboys were redshirt freshmen Tyler Davis and Chase Smith. The two wrestled in the Amateur Division at 157 and 149 pounds, respectively. Davis went 5-2 and enjoyed two wins by pin and one by major decision. Smith wrestled nine matches on Saturday and went 7-2, including a win by pin fall and another by technical fall.

Freshman Lee Helbig placed fourth at 184 pounds, going 5-2 on the day.

The Wyoming wrestling team will enjoy a short break from competition for Thanksgiving. After break, the Cowboys will compete in the Las Vegas Invitational Dec. 5-6.
