Several students at the University of Wyoming are taking on the challenge of gathering school supplies to help children in need. The Malawi School Education Drive is their cause.
Mike Hafner, Michael Fyock and Keith Resig, all geography majors, have asked their fellow classmates to help out and donate either money or school supplies to the drive. The team set up a table inside the Wyoming Union and hoped people walking by would not only open there hearts, but their wallets.
The project came to be when the group was assigned homework in their Geography and Development class. The team had to either complete a term paper or help a cause that influenced development in another country. The idea that they should host a supply drive for Malawi school children was a no-brainer.
Fyock’s mother works for a non-profit organization, El Puente/Mlathl. The organization focuses on bringing education to rural Malawi by collecting supplies and raising money. ELM helps to provide the funds to build libraries and schools. They also gather books donated from local libraries and schools in Denver to send overseas.
Last month, ELM was able to send a full 40,000-pound shipping container full of supplies to Malawi. The group is based in Denver.

The Lakota Reservation in South Dakota has had at least one reported death after the Nov. 6 blizzard that left the entire state under as much as four feet of snow and in a state of emergency.
The governor of South Dakota took the reservation’s snow removal equipment during the state of emergency and placed the reservation last on the snow removal list, leaving the reservation with 10 to 20 feet of snowdrifts and no power and food, John Stroebel, undergraduate in anthropology and member of the Anthropological Association, said.
The Anthropological Association is collecting non-perishable food, warm clothing, coats, hats, gloves, diapers, baby formula, blankets, firewood, snow shovels and cash to take to people on the reservation.
A table collecting goods will be in the Wyoming Union Breezeway from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow. Kele Johnson, the president of the Anthropological Association, is willing to pick up goods if need be and can be reached by telephone at (310) 944-1704 or by e-mail at

Goods can also be dropped off in the Anthropology Building any time before Friday afternoon.
“We’ve had a great response from students and faculty in the anthropology department. I had a guy come up and give the shirt off his back. It is our intention to bring as much food and clothing as possible,” Johnson said.

The University of Wyoming Nordic Ski Team will hold its first “Silent Nordic Art Auction” on Friday.
The ski team is holding the auction to raise funds necessary to travel throughout their season, and also to attend the United States Collegiate Ski Association National Championship, being held this year in Devil’s Thumb, Colo.
UW coach Christi Boggs said the auction is the key fundraiser the team is having this year. The team aims to raise at least $3,000 with the auction but wouldn’t mind if the return was much higher, Boggs said.
“There are items for all price ranges, like some hand-knit Nordic wear and photographs to the more expensive paintings and sculpture. We have been having tons of fundraisers to get the money we need, including raking leaves and painting houses, as well as selling Krispy Kreme donuts,” Boggs said.
Liz Turner, vice president of the team, believes the auction has a lot of opportunity.
“It should be a really cool and fun event. We have a huge variety of art at the auction, including paintings, photographs, jewelry, pottery and the hand-knit mittens and hats,” Turner said.
The centerpiece of the auction is a bronze sculpture expected to go for over $1,000.
The USCSA Nationals is an event that has been attended by UW’s Nordic skiers for the past ten years. In addition to several championships and individual awards, the competition has earned UW a reputation among its competitors.
“We hope to go out and make another strong showing. Our men’s and women’s teams both took third last March, and we hope to do well again,” Boggs said.
The auction will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Cross Country Connection at the intersection of 2nd Street and Grand Avenue.

Albany County Public Library hosted a used book sale from Nov. 1-8. The event was organized and run by the local nonprofit group Friends of the Library and helped raise money to donate to the library.
Each book started at the standard price of $1, but by the end of the week, books were sold by the bag for $4. Local residents and community members donated the books for the sale throughout the year, which was hosted in the basement of the library.
When the sale opened this year, the Friends of the Library had collected over 30,000 books, resting on almost half a mile of shelving. The books that did not get sold will either be given away or recycled.
“After a week of people taking what they want, the books are most likely not wanted, though we do try our best to be as green as possible,” Penny Schenker, head co-chair of Friends of the Library, said.
Schenker has been a member of Friends of the Library for over 20 years.
Some of the books that are donated go to the Albany County Public Library for their collections.
Others are sold online, using eBay, if they are particularly valuable.
The book sale has been going on for over 30 years.
It started as a small event, selling discarded library books, and has grown into the large affair it is today.
“It is a social event in Laramie that a lot of people look forward to,” Schenker said.
The sale has grown from a profit of $3,000 and now makes over $20,000 a year.
Friends of the Library is a volunteer organization with about 20 members throughout the year, though the number goes up to 50 when the book sale comes around.
Most members are local and all are book enthusiasts.
With the money from the event going to books, computers and any other capital goods that might be needed, the eventual goal is to enhance the public library for the community.
“The library is the essence of the community,” Schenker said.
