Cowgirl soccer season ends with tough loss PDF Print E-mail

It was a “strong” game on both sides at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex on Saturday, but the Cougars of Brigham Young University ended the Cowgirls season with a 1-0 victory.

In the first half, the sides seemed balanced: both teams had equal possession of the ball in an alternating battle. The Cougars outshot Wyoming in the first half 5-4, but neither team was able to score, leaving the scoreboard with twin zeros at the buzzer.

Despite several opportunities, the Cowgirls were not able to earn a goal in the second half, either.

The lone goal of the match came late in the second half. Cougar Jessica Carter knocked one in past Wyoming goalkeeper Jamie Scarcliff. In the remaining 10 minutes, the Cowgirls were not able to recover.

Wyoming head coach Danny Sanchez said he thought his team competed well with the No. 1 team in the Mountain West Conference.

“BYU is the best team in the conference and deserve the number one seed in the conference tournament,” Sanchez said. “I am disappointed because we battled hard; we just weren’t able to get that goal we needed.”

Cowgirl soccer, senior players ace final MWC game PDF Print E-mail

Wrapping up their conference play this weekend, and possibly their season, the Cowgirl Soccer program will host rival Brigham Young University in the final regular season match.

There is the possibility that this will be the last game of the 2008 season for Wyoming as final points scored will determine which Mountain West Conference teams will compete in the MWC tournament next week.

For six seniors, it will be their last game on the field at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. Tanya Halliday, Laine Hubbard, Amanda Lathrop, Jamie Scarcliff, Corey Theiman and Tamika Wilson will never don the symbolic brown and gold uniform again in Laramie.

But there’s still one more game to play.

Going into Saturday, the Cowgirls stand with 8-9-1 overall record and a 2-4-0 MWC record.

Soccer falls in double overtime PDF Print E-mail

In their first nationally televised game, the Wyoming Cowgirl soccer game traveled to Salt Lake City on Sunday to take on the Utah Utes.

Lasting until double-overtime, the Cowgirls played a defensive game, with the only score of the match coming outside of regulation time. Utah took the 1-0 victory.

It seemed the two teams had equal possession of the ball in the first half. Despite nine Utah shots, Wyoming goalkeeper Jamie Scarcliff made four saves to prevent a score.

The Utes’ seven shots in the second half were fruitless as well; the Cowgirl defense saw to that.

Going into overtime tied at zero, the first overtime period resembled regulation time, as both teams were aggressive. The Cowgirls were able to hold off a Utah goal but unable to earn one of their own.

Utah rallied in the second overtime period, controlling the ball. Ute Lauren Hair knocked one in around Scarcliff late in overtime, giving Utah the their only lead of the game. The Cowgirls were unable to retaliate in the remaining two minutes.

Wyoming head coach Danny Sanchez said he was pleased with the Cowgirls.

“I felt like our effort was tremendous today. I am disappointed for the girls because they played very well on both sides of the ball,” Sanchez said. “We took more corner kicks then Utah did, but we didn’t have a lot of chances that weren’t from set pieces.”

With the loss, Wyoming now holds 8-9-1 overall and 2-4 conference records. Utah advanced to a 9-8-2 overall record, and sits at 4-2 in the conference.

Wyoming’s next opponent is Brigham Young University. The Cougars sit at the top of the Mountain West Conference charts, winning all six of their conference games. Overall, the Cougars hold a 13-5-0 record.

The game will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday on Wyoming turf at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. It will be the regular season closer for the Cowgirls.

In the competition before their final game of the regular season, the Wyoming Cowgirl soccer programs heads to Utah to take on the Utes on Sunday.

After two on-the-road losses to Nevada-Las Vegas and San Diego State, the Cowgirls hold an overall record of 8-8-1 and a Mountain West Conference record of 2-3. Wyoming is tied with New Mexico and San Diego State at the No. 3 spot in the conference.

Utah, tied at No. 2 with Texas Christian University and UNLV, carries a 7-8-2 overall and a 3-2 conference record. Last weekend, the Utes earned a victory over New Mexico (7-5-4) and fell to No. 2 TCU (11-3-1).

Cowgirl soccer struggles through weekend PDF Print E-mail

It was a tough weekend for Cowgirl soccer.

The team fell to two Mountain West Conference opponents: Nevada-Las Vegas and San Diego State.

UW first played in Las Vegas, falling 3-1.

The Rebels assailed first, when Ashleigh Shoughro knocked a goal  in from seven yards out. The Cowgirls rebounded quickly. Senior Amanda Lathrop launched the ball toward the goal from the 25-yard line, her eighth goal of the season. It hit the crossbar and was knocked into the goal. Junior Emily Layton was credited with the assist.

Moving up in UW record books, Lathrop is now tied with teammate Tamika Wilson for second-most career goals scored. Both players hold 20 goals.

The first half ended with the score tied 1-1. It wasn’t until late in the second half of play that the draw was broken.

Rebel player Shannon Hughes’ initial shot was blocked. On the rebound, however, she was able to complete her mission, putting UNLV up by one. Teammate Brianna Moore added Rebel goal three soon after, forcing the Cowgirls out of the chance for a victory.

UW then took their game to California where they met San Diego State.

Things didn’t get any better. The Cowgirls fell to the Aztecs 4-0.

Aztec Jessica Gordon gave her team a 1-0 advantage, scoring early in the game.

Wyoming made three shots in the first half, compared to San Diego’s five.

 The battle continued in the second half until Jilian Riker scored the Aztec’s second goal. Ali Lokanc earned a goal soon after, giving SDSU a 3-0 lead before Brooke Holliday connected on a goal, rounding out the Aztec score to 4-0.

After the weekend, the Cowgirls hold an 8-8-1 overall record this season and are 2-3 in MWC play.

The Cowgirls will take their game on the road again this weekend in Utah. Wyoming meets the Utah Utes at 1 p.m. in Salt Lake City on Sunday. The game will broadcast live nationally on the MTN channel.
