 University of Wyoming students will get the opportunity to immerse themselves in a mix of Balinese music and dance at a free concert on Sunday.
The Wyoming Gamelan (gah-ma-lon) is a group of musicians that have been performing on campus for over 11 years, putting on concerts that are filled with color and percussion. The university’s group of Gamelan musicians is led by master Balinese drummer and composer I Made Lasmawan. Along with the University of Wyoming, Lasmawan also teaches Bali gamelan at a number of different colleges in Colorado. Lasmawan is accompanied by his family as well as students and community members.
UW Music Department Professor Rob Garnett is a piece in the Wyoming Gamelan puzzle and was happy to share his thoughts about what gamelan means to him.
“In my mind, gamelan is really two parts, the orchestra of instruments and the people who play them,” Garnett said. “Its community based and can’t be performed solo. Everything is musically interlocked, a cohesive group of friends who play music.”

Through a history class assignment, senior Noelle Robert had the opportunity to interview a Korean War veteran in Wheatland, Wyo. about his combat experience.
“He gave me a fantastic interview and really amazing stories,” Robert said of their talk, which has a 14-page transcript.
Interviewing war veterans was the class project for Professor Marianne Kamp’s History Research Methods. The purpose is for the students to contribute to the Veteran’s History Project, which is an oral history archive that the U.S. Congress created in 2000. The archived interviews are all compiled at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

This week is Alcohol Awareness Week and Cowboy Choices 180 Proof Peer Education has a few things planned to help students make intelligent decisions.
Cowboy Choices is a University of Wyoming Recognized Student Organization that is one-third of the university’s AWARE program, the other two being SexPERTS and STEP Up. All three focus on different topics (alcohol, sex and violence) but are held together by the common thread of safe alcohol consumption.
The Cowboy Choices mission statement best describes what this particular RSO is all about: “The Cowboy Choices 180 Proof Peer Education program takes a ‘harm reduction’ approach and is designed to help support students in making healthy and safe decisions regarding the responsible use of alcohol. We recognize that many University of Wyoming students regularly face choices related to alcohol. Our goal is to provide our peers with information to help them make the most informed decisions, and to support them in those decisions,” according to the Web site.

Sergeant Toby Thon has been in Wyoming’s Army National Guard for seven years. He served in Iraq in 2005. Thon, 24, maintains a delicate balance between duty and school, because he is a full-time soldier and a student at the University of Wyoming.
During daytime hours at the guard’s armory on 15th Street, Thon is the enlisted leader for retention and also a military funeral honors coordinator. He trains his honor guard teams in Laramie and Rawlins weekly. In Laramie, they practice ceremonial flag-folding and rifle drills at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post. He travels between the towns for funerals, often on weekends.

Laramie may not have a big population, but the people that are active in the community are loud. elaramie.com is a website that allows the Laramie population to talk about events, the Wyoming government, problems, or anything else that comes to mind. The most prominent feature of the website: the forums. They include message boards about announcements, new decisions at city council, things happening around town, the events of all of Albany County and Wyoming, and an everything else forum where locals can find jokes, introduce themselves if they are new to the site, and any other topic they want to talk about. The controversial subjects of Laramie are covered on the site, including the ever-growing battle over the Tour de Laramie.
