The Cowgirls proved that gold is worth more than emeralds.

Playing in the second installment of the Border War, the Cowgirls walked away victorious over the Colorado State University Rams, 71-62, in the final Border War for the season.

Four Cowgirls finished the night in double figures, led by freshman Emma Langford’s 17 points. Sophomore Hillary Carlson was close behind with 16, while Randi Richardson and Kristen Scheffler each added 12 points. Carlson also added nine rebounds.

With the win, Wyoming improved to 6-7 in the Mountain West Conference, and 14-12 overall. Colorado State, meanwhile, fell to 4-10 in the league and 9-18 total.

“I think tonight’s game was about different players stepping up and making a difference in this game,” coach Joe Legerski said. “[Going into the game], the team that would win the rebounding battle was going to win this game.”

Wyoming outrebounded CSU 41-34.

“They came out physical and aggressive,” Langford said of the Rams. “It took us a while to adjust to that.”

“That’s what happens in rival games,” Richardson said. “People bring their best game. We have a lot of confidence in ourselves right now.”

The Cowgirls hope that confidence will carry over into their next match, tomorrow, when Wyoming makes their final home appearance at 2 p.m., when they host the Air Force Falcons.

Celebrating the contribution of three players, Megan McGuffey, Elisabeth Dissen and Rebecca Vanderjagt will be honored at Senior Day.

The Falcons are 4-22 and winless in conference play, sitting in last place in the MWC.

“There probably won’t be a dry eye in the place,” Legerski said. “[The seniors] have been a big part of the success of this program.”
