Cardinal Key hosts "Lights, Camera Cure" to benefit diabetes research

Without a cure to date, type 1 (juvenile) diabetes forces a victim to be dependent on insulin injections and constantly worry about devastating complications for the rest of their life. Yet, there’s one University of Wyoming student organization doing their best to raise money with hope that a cure for diabetes will be found sooner rather than later.

The UW chapter of Cardinal Key, a junior class honorary society will host its annual banquet and auction to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRFI) on Saturday evening.

Held in the Wyoming Union Yellowstone Ballroom, the doors for this year’s banquet, “Lights, Camera, Cure,” will open at 5 p.m. Dinner, catered by the Altitude Chophouse and Brewery, will begin at 6 p.m. with a live auction starting at 7:30 p.m.

Both Loghry and Epler are co-chairs of Cardinal Key.

“Most of our families either have someone who has diabetes or know someone who has diabetes and can somehow relate to it,” Epler said. “It’s really something that people realize is out there.”

For the silent auction, which will begin once the doors open and end with the conclusion of the live auction, Epler said there will be nearly 50 items to bid on, some of which include jewelry, paintings and gift certificates from various businesses in Laramie. Starting in December, she said Cardinal Key members have worked hard to receive donations for the auctions from UW students and administrators as well as individuals in the city, state and region. Nine notable pieces of art will be up for grabs for the live auction as well as a UW lamp with the bucking horse on it.

In addition to the dinner and auctions, Epler said those in attendance will also have the chance to listen to at least one testimonial from someone who suffers from juvenile diabetes.

Overall, she said Cardinal Key is mostly excited for the event because of the positive impact it will have on JDRFI.

“Juvenile diabetes research is our national philanthropy for Cardinal Key,” Epler said. “We hope the funds we raise from the banquet can help with the research and clinical trials needed to help find a cure.”

Loghry added, “JDRFI is the world’s leading researcher to cure type 1 diabetes.”

Leading up to the banquet, Epler said Cardinal Key is selling buttons for $3 in the Union that say “One button closer—Lights, Camera, Cure.” All the proceeds from button sales will also go to JDRFI.
