Leadership series targets youth

The third annual leadership development series will begin Thursday. The series will focus on ways to strengthen participants’ leadership abilities within the University of Wyoming and Laramie communities.

The program will be taught by Matt Stech, a graduate assistant for the SLCE office.

This year’s Student Leadership and Civic Engagement series will consist of six parts held every Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for six weeks. It runs until April 9. The workshops are designed to target young leaders.

The series is free to any UW student and is especially aimed at those students that have a limited leadership experience and want to expand their leadership ability.

The six sessions are: Vision and Mission, Planning, Priorities & Success, The Self Leader, The Many Roles of the Leader, Leading Through Relationships & Community, and Service & Responsibility in Leadership.

The 90-minute workshops will consist of three parts: one-third lecture style format, one-third discussion as a group and one-third of the time spent participating in group team-building activities. Generally 15 to 25 students participate in the series every year.

“We really want to try to get those students that have never had any leadership experience at all,” Stech said.

“Many of the students we attract are ones that already have plenty of leadership experience, so it is really nice to incorporate those students that have a limited leadership experience. We want to show them all of the opportunities available here at UW.”

SLCE works with students at UW to increase student leadership ability and involvement in campus activities and the local community.

SLCE is funded through the ASUW and several private donors. Besides offering the spring leadership series, they helped to sponsor Pokes Vote, First Year Institute and other leadership related activities.
