Wyoming swimming and diving has finally reached the long-awaited Mountain West Conference Championships, and they will get their chance to compete for the top spot beginning today.

It has been two weeks since the Cowboys and Cowgirls were last in action. They have since been working to prepare for the MWC Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., which run today through Saturday.  

Wyoming coach Tom Johnson has always scheduled this two-week break and said he sees it as beneficial every year. 

“It’s an opportunity to get some rest and for everyone to sleep in their own beds,” Johnson said. “It just helps to lay low and concentrate on conference.”

The Cowboys were atop the MWC all season and only had one loss.

The men’s swimming team has  been strong all season, with great individual contributions from a plethora of swimmers. The divers, meanwhile, are led by the three-headed monster of Tyler Miller, Kyle Bogner and Mark Murdoch.

The Cowgirls finished the season 12-4 with all four losses at the hands of MWC opponents. The team has been up and down this season, but has been strong in the distance freestyle events in large part do to the performance of senior Aimee Stinson. 

On the boards, junior Stephanie Ortiz, who has been successful all season long, leads the Cowgirls. 

The Cowboys are ranked second in the conference trailing UNLV. 

The Cowgirls enter the MWC Championships in sixth place with a 4-4 conference record. 

The Cowboys and Cowgirls are eagerly awaiting conference championships. 

“They’re pretty wild actually. They’ve had a lot of time to rest and now they’ve got so much energy they don’t know what to do with it,” Johnson said.

The conference finals begin today for the Cowboys and Cowgirls and will continue through Friday.
