Israeli filmmaker presents talk

The director of the award-winning film “Yiftah’s Daughter” will present a lecture along with film clips at 7 tonight in Classroom Building Room 142. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Israeli filmmaker and film historian Einat Kapach will show film clips in order to analyze how Jewish holidays are represented in movies with her talk, “The Jewish Year in Hollywood and Israeli Cinema.” Kapach will be able to share Jewish tradition and culture with University of Wyoming students through her explanation of the films.

Wendy Berelson, an adviser of the University of Wyoming Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, said Kapach may speak about the film “The Big Lebowski” and how the weekly Jewish holiday of Shabbat (Jewish Sabbath) is represented in the film.

Berelson said the lecture and film clips will be interesting to any student who would like to learn about Jewish tradition and culture.

“Students should be interested in the event because there is such a small Jewish population in Wyoming, and this gives students the chance to learn about and help them understand Jewish tradition and culture,” Berelson said.

Berelson said Kapach is part of a group out of Israel called Soul Train that brings such programs to towns with small Jewish populations around the world. This is Kapach’s third trip to Laramie. On Kapach’s last visit she presented a well-received program on Jewish humor in film.

Kapach is also known for her documentary film, “Two Legacies.” She has directed both short films and documentaries and most recently short films about organizations that do charity work in Israel and the U.S., Berelson said.

Kapach has lectured in communities and universities across the U.S. and in Israel on the history of film with a particular emphasis on Israeli cinema.
