Art museum provides interesting classes

The University of Wyoming Art Museum art classes started this week.

“Using the art work on exhibit at the art museum as inspiration, students are encouraged to explore their own ideas and develop their own creative talents in the Art Museum’s Shelton Studio,” Wendy Bredehoft, the education curator and director of the educational programming, said of this semester’s classes.

The Art Museum is providing six different classes during the spring semester. Three of these classes (Can I Try That, Remembering Relationships, and Who’s in my Community) are for Pre-K through Kindergarten on Thursdays and grades one through three on Tuesdays. These classes meet from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and are lead by Brendan Magone. Students should wear comfortable clothing but paint shirts will be provided for messy sessions.

Can I Try That will take inspiration from the 34^th Annual Juried UW Student Exhibition. The class encourages experimentation and focuses on trying new processes such as painting, printing, wood sculpture, mask making and engraving.

Remembering Relationships will encourage students to honor current relationships, family, friends, etc. and will help students to express these relationships using two art mediums.

Who’s in My Community students will explore city citizens of interest such as neighbors, teachers, police officers and librarians. The students will explore an international exhibition (The Disappeared) in this course.

Other classes the art museum is offering include one class for grades four through eight that meets from 10 a.m. to noon each Saturday. This class will entail many of the same concepts as the Pre-K through 3^rd grade classes, simply on a higher level. According to the Web site, the sessions will involve “more creative rigor, a higher skill set, and a wider variety of 2D and 3D materials.”

The art museum also has a Teen Apprenticeship Program. The program is open to teens 13 and up. Those accepted into the program will receive training to work alongside artists and teachers in the art studio classes and will assist with activities and planning for the program. Apprentices work at least 20 hours in the studio and assist with the Spring Break Art Camp for approximately ten hours. After completing the program, students have the opportunity to use the Shelton Studio, for 20 hours, under the guidance and supervision of an artist/teacher for an approved project.

On Monday’s from 7-9 p.m. the art museum is offering “The No-Stress Art Class: Painting With Watercolors.” Artist Jeanie Schlump will be teaching the weekly class. The class is structured to allow for different levels of experience and skill. Professional Development Credit is available for teachers who complete this class.

The art museum is also offering a Spring Break Art Camp. The camp titled: Explore the Possibilities will concentrate on creating art and written word, together. The camp will run March 16^th through 20^th at 1-4:45 p.m. each day.
