Cowgirls take on Weber State Wildcats

“We’re taking opportunities away from the chance to score,” Legerski said. “We’re averaging close to 20 turnovers a game. You start doing that and you’ll end up being .500. That’s where we’re at right now, and we need to make sure that we become better with the basketball, and we have to do it quickly.”

Noticeably absent from the Cowgirl starting line-up is junior guard Aubrey Vandiver. She is still benched due to illness, and Legerski said he is working on a time frame to make a decision about his star player.

“We’re looking at the first of the year,” Legerski said. “If Aubrey’s not ready to go in January, then she’ll be redshirted for the season.”

Legerski said that traveling will impact performance.

“The biggest thing is, once again, we’re on the road,” Legerski said. “We’re going to be out there for a month with the Oregon trip, now we have Weber State, Idaho State then the shootout. It’s a long time to be away.”

Weber State looks to be a challenge for the Cowgirls.

“They had a big win against the University of Washington at home,” Legerski said. “They’re playing very well. They’re going to come out in an attacking mode, trying to get to the basket. They’re going to be able to shoot the three.”

The Wildcats sit at 3-2 so far this season, returning two starters and seven letterwinners from last year’s squad. This will be the 27th meeting between the two teams.

Weber State has won more games than Wyoming, at 14-12, but the last time the two teams met in December 2005, Wyoming came out on top.

Freshman star Emma Langford leads the Cowgirls with 15.5 points per game to go along with 5.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists.

Freshman teammate Kristen Scheffler is adding an additional 11.7 points and 2.2 rebounds per contest to lead the Cowgirls.
Sophomore Caitlin Anderson’s 20.2 points and 9.6 rebounds per game lead Weber State, while juniors Alu Thordenson and Tonya Schnibbe are adding an additional 14.8 and 14.0 points per outing, respectively.

Despite the challenges the team now faces, Wyoming will have to make some adjustments on the court to walk away victorious.

“We’re going to have to play where we take care of the basketball,” Legerski said. “We’re going to have to start making free throws and getting those opportunities to make easy baskets.”
