The first annual Beards for Benefit Shave Party was held Nov. 30 in the Wyoming Union Center Ballroom, hosted by the Kappa Sigma fraternity. The event was free and open to the public. Donations were accepted to benefit Habitat for Humanity and the University of Wyoming Colleges Against Cancer.

“At the Beards for Benefit we were shaving off our facial hair for our charities,” Kappa Sigma social chair David Steinberg said. “It was nice to get rid of all our facial hair after growing it for the entire month of November.”

While the event was held with a serious intent to raise money for two charities, the event also provided fun for the public. Kappa Sigma members and other participants shaved unique designs into their beards during the evening.

Fifteen men from the Kappa Sigma fraternity participated in Beards for Benefit along with seven men from Farmhouse and eight men from Pi Kappa Alpha. Approximately 35 people showed up for the party.

The idea originated with the Kappa Sigma fraternity at UW. They were just colonized by the national organization Nov. 23, since they met the requirement of 25 members. Kappa Sigma hopes to attain chapter status by the end of Spring 2009. To become a chapter, they must have 50 members and complete a checklist given by the national headquarters.

Kappa Sigma hopes they can establish and build a house for their fraternity in the next three years. The total amounts from the Beards for Benefit Shave Party will be released by Dec. 6.
