Local band for a green cause

In an attempt to help raise environmental awareness among students, as well as provide quality entertainment, the university will host the Green Rock Local Band Night this week.

Of the local talent that floods the Laramie music scene, eight local bands submitted demos and were chosen to take the stage during this green awareness event. High Country, Chase the Moment, The Neo-Nostalgics, Ross Lindstrom, Lazy By Nature, The Alley Connection, Herman O and Ghosts of Predators Past will all be part of tomorrow’s line up of bands.

“There will also be a couple of speakers between bands and some different RSOs from around campus that will be talking about sustainability,” Jason Joyce, lead student programmer for the Student Activities Council said.

Joyce went on to explain why this event only consisted of local talent.

“We wanted only local bands to emphasize the idea of a carbon footprint,” Joyce said. “We didn’t want anyone driving across the country just to come play here.”

This year’s Green Rock Local Band Night is the first of what Joyce hopes will be many such events on campus. When asked if Green Rock will continue next year Joyce replied, “I think it has to. It would be kind of a crime not to carry it on.”

With each new year come new environmental problems. Joyce described his vision of Green Rock in the future as an event that changes with the environment. “We’ll have to mold and shape it depending on the issues,” he said. “Hopefully the number of issues will go down over the years.”

The free event will take place at 8 tonight in the Union Ballroom and is an opportunity for local bands to showcase their musical talents.
