Students looking for something to add some color to their dorm rooms or apartments can attend a plant sale this Friday.

A variety of plants, from common to more exotic, will be for sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Williams Botany Conservatory. All proceeds from the plant sale go to the Botany Club.

There will be more than 100 plants available for purchase. The prices of the plants will be fixed, ranging from $3 to $20.  Plant posters will be given away at the sale, one of which shows all the threatened and endangered plants of Wyoming.

Bill Higgins, the conservatory manager, said that the plant sale is the busiest when it firsts opens, and it varies from just a handful of people to around 20 in the conservatory at any given time.

“Usually by noon, we’ve sold over 75 percent of them,” Higgins said.

The plants will consist of mostly succulents, cacti, “not-in-bloom-right-now” orchids, euphorbias and forage plants.

Plants that produce a pleasant smell, like the coconut orchids, night blooming plants with flowers around nine inches, like the epiphyllum and hardy plants that can survive with little to a lot of water, or little sunlight, like the sansevieria (known as either mother-in-law tongue or snake plant), will also be for sale.

“If you go to a plant nursery, you might have a hard time finding these,” Higgins said.

This annual plant sale money goes towards the Botany Club’s out of town trips, such as the Denver Botanical Gardens or Cheyenne Botanical Gardens, seminar speakers, purchasing additional plants and more.

The Botany Club gives the chance of anybody interested in plants to interact with the department of botany. The club was formed to provide information on scholarships, other academic opportunities and ongoing events in the department of botany.
