Activist and cultural historian, and University of Wyoming’s current Eminent Writer in Residence for the MFA Creative Writing Program, Rebecca Solnit will present an art talk at 7 p.m. Jan. 31 at the museum, according to a press release. The art talk is titled “The Laramie Atlas Project: Work-in-Progress” and will cover Solnit’s progress on her month-long effort, with the help of an interdisciplinary group of UW students, to create a unique atlas of Laramie, according to the press release. Aside from the discussion, Solnit will consult students across campus on their writing skills. She will work with MFA students and also attend classes across campus. Solnit has written 12 books and been recognized for her work in non-fiction. “A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster” and “Infinite City: A San Francisco Atlas” are just a few of Solnit’s latest works. “An echo of Solnit’s work on the Infinite City Project in San Francisco in 2010, the Laramie Atlas Project is a unique opportunity for artists, writers, citizens and students to re-think and re-imagine their neighborhoods,” the press release said. “The project invites students to make new maps-from the traditional to the innovative and eccentric-and examine their communities sense of place.” The talk is open to all in the Laramie and university community, and admission is free.
