Lance Michael Kerwin was an American actor who was born on November 6, 1960, and died on January 24, 2023.
He was best known for his roles on TV and in movies when he was a child and teen in the 1970s. He was the main character on the TV show James at 15 and in the TV movies The Loneliest Runner and Salem’s Lot.
Early Life of Lance Kerwin
Kerwin was raised in the California city of Lake Elsinore. His father, an acting instructor, brought scripts home for him to read. His mother was an actress and, later, a talent agent. He was the youngest brother of five. His brother Shane filled in for him.
In the 1970s, Kerwin appeared in several television movies and programs. John Holmstrom, a former theatre critic and governor of the British Film Institute, described him as “perhaps America’s leading boy actor of the late 1970s… a lovely lad… with remarkable acting sensitivity.” In many of his dramatic roles, such as The Loneliest Runner, The Boy Who Drunk Too Much, and Children of Divorce, he portrayed distressed characters with severe obstacles.

In 1985, he co-starred alongside Melissa Gilbert, Lee Remick, and Lauren Hutton in an episode of Shelly Duvall’s children’s television series Faerie Tale Theatre titled “Snow Queen,” a reworking of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale.
What Caused Lance Kerwin to Die?
Lance’s daughter Savanah wrote on Facebook on January 25 that her father had passed away.
“I’m sorry that we couldn’t get in touch with everyone to tell them in person, but Lance Kerwin died yesterday morning,” she wrote. “We appreciate all the kind words, memories, and prayers. He cared about every single one of you.”
As of the time this article was written, no one knew what caused Lance’s death, even though he had been sick for a long time.
A buddy of Lance’s launched a GoFundMe page in June 2021 to assist with his recovery, mentioning a back ailment among other things. As a result, Lance updated the GoFundMe page with a sincere expression of gratitude.
“As I read this, I’m not sure [any] monies will be raised but I can’t help but think how blessed I am to have made some friends early in life, some of whom became fans and attended my performances, but most of whom I can still call friends.”

Lance thanked their mother and God for his children as well. “They look much like their mom and have inherited her wit and charm. They don’t expect much from me, but I’ll give them everything I’ve got anyway “He put pen to paper.
In his final years, Lance placed a premium on his faith and his family.
Lance Kerwin Had a Fruitful Career as an Actor
While horror aficionados remember him from Salem’s Lot, Lance had a few key parts, one of which was as the titular James in the NBC drama series James at 15 (later changed to James at 16). (later changed to James at 16).
Although it only ran for one season, the show was appreciated for how it dealt with the sensitive theme of growing up. Tom Shales of The Washington Post claimed the show was “not perfect, not groundbreaking, not always deliriously urgent [but was] still the most respectable new entertainment series of the season.”
Lance went on to become a fixture of 1970s entertainment and remained acting into the 1990s before leaving Hollywood for a greater purpose. According to Deadline, he “retired from acting to become a youth minister” and relocated to Hawaii to work for the U-Turn for Christ ministry.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 epidemic nearly wiped off his secular efforts, so he returned to California, where he died. Lance is survived by his children Fox, Tereh, Kailani, and Justus, in addition to his daughter Savanah.
