Robertson claims that being a businessman was always his ultimate career goal. He finished near the top of his class at Yale Law School in 1955 but was unsuccessful on the New York bar exam.
However, he considered this a minor setback because he had already begun a successful career with a large Wall Street corporation. While having supper with novelist and World War II veteran Cornelius Vanderbreggen in a Philadelphia restaurant, he decided for Christ. Robertson’s conversion caused him to leave the business world and enter the ministry.

The head of the Christian Broadcasting Network, which airs the “700 Club,” stated that he would not “impose guilt” on anyone who divorces a spouse with the condition, but added, “Get an ethicist other than me to give you the answer.”
Terry Meeuwsen, Robertson’s co-host, asked him about the “for better or for worse” and “in sickness and in health” phrases in marriage vows.
