The future governor of West Virginia was born on August 24, 1947, in Farmington. The second of five kids, he’s number two in the family. John Manchin and Mary are his parents. His mother was an immigrant from the Czech Republic, and both of his parents are of Italian origin.
His family business was selling carpets and furnishings. Previous mayors of Farmington include both his father and grandfather.

He ran against Democratic congressman and former opponent Ken Hechler, and won the primary on August 28. He ran against Republican businessman John Raese and won the general election.
