After her ex-husband Kenneth Branagh’s romance with Helena Bonham Carter, Emma Thompson has spoken up about the numbing effect it had on her.
The Oscar-winning actress told The New Yorker that she felt like “shattered dishes” after learning of the affair. Thompson further stated that she felt ashamed when she found out about it.
“I was utterly, utterly blind to the fact that he had relationships with other women on set,” she said. “What I learned was how easy it is to be blinded by your own desire to deceive yourself.” Thompson was deeply affected by the affair, to the point where self-doubt became a serious burden. “I was half alive,” she admitted.
Where Did Thompson and Branagh First Met?
On the set of the 1987 series Fortunes of War, Thompson and Branagh met, and the resemblance between them and Thompson’s father led to an instant attraction. She said to The New Yorker that Branagh had tried to make her laugh by singing to her during a break between takes.
“I burst into tears because he sounded exactly like my father singing on The Magic Roundabout,” she said.
The marriage between Thompson and Branagh, which began in 1989, ended in discord after she discovered his extramarital activities. It was on the set of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, in 1994, that Branagh and Bonham Carter first met.
By 1995, Thompson claimed that the affair had caused the end of her marriage, which had not been widely reported at the time. Separation had taken place by then.
Emma Thompson Relationship With Greg Wise

“I’ve learned more from my second marriage just by being married,” she said. “As my mother says, ‘the first twenty years are the hardest.'”
Thompson shared her story of how she almost lost her shot at real love with Wise on The Graham Norton Show in January of 2020. She divulged the backstory of how he had first approached Kate Winslet, another one of her co-stars.
“Before he did the job, he went to see a friend of his who was a bit witchy and she said he would meet his future partner on the film [Sense and Sensibility],” Thompson explained. “He assumed it wasn’t me because I was married and quite a lot older than him so he thought it might be Kate [Winslet].”
The man who would eventually become Thompson’s husband took Winslet to the Glastonbury festival on a date.
“She was so bored, and he thought, ‘This isn’t going to work, who can it be?’” Thompson recalled. “Then things happened that probably shouldn’t have happened, and it’s been 25 years in May.”
