How Did Win Butler Respond to Allegations of Sexual Misconduct?

According to a source, the vocalist for Arcade Fire, Win Butler, has been accused of sexual assault by four different people; however, the singer says that the relationships he was involved in were consensual.

According to Pitchfork, one of the accusers, who identifies as gender fluid and uses they/them pronouns, stated that Butler, who is now 42 years old, sexually attacked them twice in 2015 when they were 21 years old. The allegations were made by the accuser.

Three of the accusers are women, and they assert that their relationships with the artist were inappropriate because of an age difference and “power dynamics” between them and the singer.

According to the women, the events that were described took place between 2016 and 2020, while the women were between the ages of 18 and 23, as reported by Pitchfork. When the claimed interactions took place, Butler was between the ages of 36 and 39.

Butler, who co-founded the Grammy-winning indie rock band with his now-wife Regine Chassagne in 2001, has denied any wrongdoing through a publicist, who has stated that the interactions were consensual and that he did not initiate any of them. Butler and Chassagne have been married since 2011.

The accusers each detailed their contacts with Pitchfork, revealing what they claim to be unwanted kisses, photographs of genitalia, and unwelcome touching. The singer acknowledged in a statement that at the time he was suffering from a period of depression as well as heavy drinking.

“There is no easy way to say this, and the hardest thing I have ever done is having to share this with my son. The majority of these relationships were short-lived, and my wife is aware – our marriage has, in the past, been more unconventional than some,” he said in a statement.

“I have connected with people in person, at shows, and through social media, and I have shared messages of which I am not proud. Most importantly, every single one of these interactions has been mutual and always between consenting adults. It is deeply revisionist, and frankly just wrong, for anyone to suggest otherwise.

“I have never touched a woman against her will, and any implication that I have is simply false. I vehemently deny any suggestion that I forced myself on a woman or demanded sexual favors. That simply, and unequivocally, never happened.”

“While these relationships were all consensual, I am very sorry to anyone who I have hurt with my behavior. Life is filled with tremendous pain and error, and I never want to be part of causing someone else’s pain.”
