George and Ali: How Did These Two Meet?

One of the most admirable celebrity couples is George Stephanopoulos, 60, and Ali Wentworth, 56. After nearly 20 years of marriage, the Good Morning America presenter and actress nonetheless look more in love than ever.

They’ve had quite an exciting existence together between their careers and their children, and they’ve been open about their respect and affection for one another in interviews. Even Ali, who is herself a comedian, has acknowledged that one of her husband’s strongest qualities is his charisma and his ability to “laugh at himself”.

How Did These Two Meet?

After a blind date in April of 2001, George and Ali were engaged in June. By the following November, they were married in New York City’s Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.

Ali has frequently posted PDA photos of the two of them online with endearing remarks about how much she adores him, and George has openly acknowledged gushing over her in the same month that they tied the knot.

”You know how when you go on a date and the first 15 minutes are on automatic pilot?” he told The New York Times about their immediate connection in Nov. 2001. ”About 15 minutes in, she just leaned in and said something, and we were suddenly in another place, in another universe, immediately. We went from strangers to friends to being in love in days.”

Does Ali Love Cooking?

During her appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan, the comic revealed the secret to George’s undying love for her. Kelly was curious about Ali and Elliott’s shared pleasure in cooking, and the conversation eventually turned to the origins of this passion.

“She’s an amazing cook out of curiosity and interest,” Ali replied. “I’m an amazing cook because I’m mediocre in bed and I had to bring to the marriage something worth… George Stephanopoulos isn’t going to just marry anybody, you know what I mean?”

Do Conflicts Happen Between Ali and George?

As Ali sat down with her husband and his co-anchors on the hit talk program, she and George discussed how their differences strengthen their marriage. She reflected on a past experience that exemplified their coping mechanisms and, of course, included some lightheartedness.

“We were flying to Nantucket and there was a lightning storm. We all thought we were going to die, I was trying to calm everyone down at the back of the plane but when you dip very quickly I would say ‘We’re going to die!’ then ‘We’re good, we’re good,’ and I just see his [George’s] back the whole time and I think he’s probably freaked out,” she explained on the show in 2018. “So I threw a pen at the back of his head – and nothing happened. And then I realized he was meditating! I was like ‘Where are the life jackets?’ and he was meditating!”

“And we are here today!”  George’s response was priceless and hilarious. “And you are so Zen and we are here today.”

Is There Any Book About Their Life?

In her 2018 book, Go Ask Ali: Half-Baked Advice (and Free Lemonade), Ali opens up about her experiences in her relationship with George. She joked about their sex life as well.

“The lowest moment for me is when the time arrives for the fateful question: ‘How often do you and your husband have sex?’” she wrote in the memoir. “I have lost friends with this question.” She went on to claim that friends have reacted strongly to her when they hear how active her sex life with George is.

“The women gasp and scream like I’ve confessed that I shot my dog,” she joked. “One of them always slams her fist down on the table; a woman’s wine glass once smashed in her hand. I’m sorry! We’re hot for each other. Jesus!”

What Are There Plans for Their 20th Wedding Anniversary?

The actress also discussed their preparations for their landmark 20th wedding anniversary, revealing that they had considered hosting a party to celebrate the occasion but ultimately opted against doing so. In addition to that, she said that they didn’t intend to exchange gifts with one another either.

She went on to hysterically add, “I told him ‘Honey, I love you, but don’t buy me the most disgusting piece of jewelry that I have to return behind your back and get store credit and buy some headphones’,”.

How Many Children Do They Have?

There are two offspring from George and Ali’s union. After the birth of their first daughter, Elliott Anastasia, in September 2002, they were blessed with the arrival of their second daughter, Harper Andrea, in June 2005.

Ali posts Instagram photos of the family celebrating milestones like prom and graduation, and the doting parents are regularly seen publicly gushing over their children.

“The older one who looks like George, she’s more serious, but she likes to laugh. The younger one, unfortunately, is turning into me. She looks like me. She’s very funny,” Ali cheekily told Parade about her and George’s daughters. “I’m the kind of parent that you could tell you got straight As on your exam, and I’m [absently] like, ‘Oh, that’s great.’ My youngest, Harper, says something really funny, then I’ll bake her a cake and put candles in it. I’ll be so excited. The thing is, it’s instinctual. You can’t teach anybody to be funny. She kinda has it, which is great.”
