Is It Based on a True Story?
Manti, his fictitious “girlfriend,” and others involved in the bizarre incident tell the real story of how the player was conned online and nearly lost his career when the deception became public in The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist.
Manti’s “girlfriend,” whom he had never met in person, turned out to be a catfishing persona created by Ronaiah “Naya” Tuiasosopo, who admits in the documentary that she was “in love” with the character’s success online.
The footballer has admitted that he once believed the woman’s claims that Manti’s alleged girlfriend was killed in a car accident and then succumbed to leukemia. People, including Manti himself (who denies any involvement in the hoax), have questioned the story’s veracity and wondered if he was behind it in an effort to boost his career.
