Stray Game Release Date: Is It Necessary to Get a Premium Subscription?

The video game Stray is a sci-fi feline adventure in which the player assumes the role of a small ginger cat and explores an abandoned underground city.

The player must use their wits to navigate the city’s desolate streets and avoid the many threats that lurk there, particularly bizarre creatures that resemble headcrabs and attempt to consume anything that moves. As you make your way through these unexplained ruins, you need to get ready to run, jump, and climb in order to reach the exit.

At the very least, judging by the number of Steam wishlists on which it is included, Stray is one of the most anticipated games of the year. And with good reason; for evidence, take a look at our preview of Stray. On July 19, you’ll be allowed to begin playing, however, the actual start time may be different depending on where you are.

You may start playing Stray as soon as it releases by checking out the release times shown below, which are specific to each location.

Stray Game: Release Date

The release date for Stray on Steam is the 19th of July. Because it is a timed console exclusive for PlayStation, you won’t be able to play it on Xbox Game Pass either due to the fact that it is a PlayStation game.

The following is the launch window for each region:

  • UK: 5 pm (BST)
  • Europe: 6 pm (CET)
  • US East-Coast: 12 pm (EST)
  • US West-Coast: 9 am (PST)

Even if the game has a relatively modest file size, the installation process requires a space of 10 GB, and the game itself takes up even less space than that. You can also locate the required technical specifications on the main page for Steam.

Is It Necessary to Get a Premium Subscription?

As it isn’t included in the Standard subscription level, you’ll need to subscribe to either the Extra or Premium tier of Sony’s service in order to get Stray for free on PlayStation Plus. If you already have an active subscription to PlayStation Plus, then you’re good to go.

It’s possible that Stray will become a future free monthly PS Plus game for all subscription tiers at some point in the future, but if this is the case, it will be quite some time before this happens, and you don’t want to have to wait for it.

What Was the Source of Inspiration?

A PlayStation blog post about Stray shed light on the development process behind the highly anticipated cat simulator. It would appear that the many pictures and movies of cats that can be found on the internet were a good source of ideas. It said in the post:

Trying to control a cat – whether it’s in real life or when making a video game – is definitely not a walk in the park! From the very beginning, we knew that the controls and animations of our star character needed to be absolutely spot-on in order to properly convey this exhilarating feeling of skills and movement. So Miko, our cat animator, took the challenge to heart and spent considerable time looking for images and video references. The good and somewhat surprising thing we found is this: It really seems that the whole internet was basically invented for the sole purpose of hosting loads of cute cat pictures and videos! So we ended up having a lot of very good material to work with for references.

Does the Cat Die in Stray?

Yes, the cat can die in the same way that Mario can – temporarily, but not permanently in the game itself.

At various points, little, ravenous critters grab onto the cat and try to devour it. Unless the cat is able to throw off its foes and flee, it will succumb to the monsters and fall to its knees in defeat. However, you’ll return to a checkpoint once the screen turns red, and you’ll find your feline friend in good health again.

It’s also painful to watch the cat get hurt in the story at several points, unfortunately. Just be patient and know that your cat will recover from his or her injury in due course.
