When Will The Woman King Be Released?

Gina Prince-Bythewood is going to direct the next action-drama titled “The Woman King”. Based on a plot developed by Maria Bello, the script was written by Prince-Bythewood in collaboration with Dana Stevens. This film is based on the epic and true narrative of the Dahomey Amazons and their fight for survival.

It stars Viola Davis, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Fences, in a role that we have never seen her play before.

During the ceremony for the Women Making History Awards that took place in 2015 at the Los Angeles National Women’s History Museum, Bello presented Davis with a pitch for the movie in front of a live audience. At this point, Maria Bello and Viola Davis are serving as co-producers for the completed product.

Asked about her new role, Davis said to Variety:

“I’ve never had a role like this before. It’s transformative. And to be a producer on it and to know that I had a hand in bringing it to fruition… There’s always a vision you have for your career, but there are very few roles as an actress of color. Dark skin with a wide nose and big lips. I’m just gonna continue to say it. Those stories are extraordinarily limited.”

The role of King Ghezo, monarch of Dahomey, will be played by John Boyega, who made his big-screen debut as Finn in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. His character looks to General Nanisca for advice and places his faith in him.

His younger self as Lord Voldemort/Tom Riddle in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince plays Santo Ferreira, the film’s primary adversary. Sheila Atim will play Amenza, a high-ranking lieutenant who can be seen standing by General Nanisca’s side throughout the film.

What Is the Storyline of the Movie?

If you want to get the full picture of The Woman King’s story, you’ll need a little background information.

The Agojie, a ferocious all-female military regiment in the West African Kingdom of Dahomey in the late 1800s, must fight for their lives and the freedom of their kingdom when confronted by outside aggressors. Historians dubbed these women “Dahomey Amazons” because of their resemblance to the mythical Amazons.

Women gradually took over the military in the Kingdom due to the high mortality rate of men caused by the frequent battling with other West African states and the slave trade.

General Nanisca (Davis) finds himself in a precarious position as European armies advance on Dahomey. Based on the Franco-Dahomeyan war of 1890-1894, she waged an epic attack against them. Nawi, a new recruit played by Thuso Mbedu, is also the center of Nanisca’s attention.

Based on the true “last Dahomey Amazon” of the same name, Nawi is the inspiration for the character. Nawi claimed in a 1978 interview to have engaged in combat with the French in 1982. When she eventually passed away in 1979, she had already reached the grand old age of a century.

Since their first appearance in The Woman King, the “Agojie,” or Amazons of Dahomey, have appeared in a number of other popular culture contexts, including Marvel’s The Black Panther in 2018. Female bodyguards and guardians known as the “Dora Milaje” are modeled after the Dahomey Amazons.

To learn more about the Dahomey Amazons’ role in the development of Marvel’s Dora Milaje team, actress Lupita Nyong’o, who played Nakia in Black Panther, interviewed descendants of T’Challa’s ex-lover Chadwick Boseman’s character, T’Challa, in 2019.
