Will Air Gear Have a Season 2? Is the Source Material Available?
Fans of this sports anime have been clamoring for a sequel for almost fifteen years now. This season of Air Gear has not yet been renewed, hence there won’t be any new episodes. However, as a fan, we always want to know if our favorite anime will return.
The manga was first published in 2003 and finished in July 2012 after a run of 37 volumes. The series’ popularity grew during publication to the point where an anime adaptation was being explored. By September of that year, the television show had finished airing its whole run.
Here’s everything you need to know about Air Gear’s renewal status.
Will Air Gear Have a Season 2?
The first season of Air Gear was produced by Toei Animation over a decade ago, and the company hasn’t made any announcements about the series’ future. As a result, the second season of Air Gear is quite doubtful.
The studio, on the other hand, has more than enough material to continue the show for another season. Only 104 of the manga’s 358 chapters have been covered in the first season. They have enough material to make at least another two seasons of the show.
However, the fact that Satelight had already produced an OVA sequel to the series made Air Gear Season 2 appear even further out of reach. Prior to the main anime series’ timeframe, Satelight adapted a few random chapters from the manga.
The first episode is based on the fight between Ikki and Ringo in the 16th volume of the manga, while the second episode is based on Kogarasumaru vs. Sleeping Forest in the 23rd/24th volume of the manga.
Season renewals for vintage shows like this one are usually preferable to a remake or reboot. There are several examples, but Berserk and Fruit Basket is one of the most well-known. All we can do now is hope that the anime series will be resurrected by a new studio.
If this series is renewed then we can expect it at end of 2023 or early 2024.
Is the Source Material Available?
This season’s renewal depends on the availability of source material for Air Gear Season 2’s manga series. Fortunately, there’s enough material for another full season of the sports anime to be made.
There are a total of 37 volumes in the Air Gear manga series. The first 12 seasons of the show included adaptations of the source material as well as new material. Whereas, the anime’s two OVAs occupied the storylines of Volumes 16, 23, and 24.
In this case, about 22 volumes of the manga have not been made into an animation. As a result, there’s plenty of material for the sequel. However, if Season 2 is renewed, the show’s creators will still have enough material for a third season if necessary. Currently, we’re hoping that the anime gets another chance to shine.
Which Cast Members Are Likely to Reappear?
Characters served by Air Gear include a wide range of people, both in terms of motive and personality. Here are some of the characters who may return for a second season:
The primary protagonist and the leader of Kogarasumaru is Itsuki voiced by Kenta Kamakari. In AT, he’s known as the crow, thanks to the Noyamano family, who introduced him to the community.
Ikki’s boyhood friend Kazuma Mikura was voiced by Clint Bickham. When he joins Kogarasumaru, it’s because of him. Because he’s going to be the future Flame King, he’s Spitfire’s pupil.
Team Sleeping Forest and Thorn Queen’s new leader, Ringo Noyamano is voiced by Luci Christian. The Noyamano sisters introduced Ikki to AT through her.
As the group’s leader and self-styled “Migratory Bird,” Simca is also known as Simca the Swallow. A former Sleeping Forest member, Spitfire is the Flame King at the moment.
