From now on, Pooh will be appearing in indie horror films rather than Disney ones. Yes, horror fans have discovered Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, an upcoming picture featuring the golden bear in his very own horrific movie.
Filmed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield and premiered on Wednesday, the short features gruesome imagery that harkens back to slasher films of the past.
AA Milne’s works are no longer owned by Disney, so a project like Blood and Honey does not require their approval. The renowned anthropomorphic bear initially debuted in 1926, and as it was produced before 1976, its copyright lasted 95 years before it was put into the public domain.
Who Will Be the Cast in Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey?
Rhys Frake-Waterfield directs Blood and Honey, which stars Craig David Dowsett as the title character from a children’s novel.
Maria Taylor as Maria
Danielle Ronald as Zoe
May Kelly as Tina
Natasha Tosini as Lara
Amber Doig-Thorne as Alice
Chris Cordell as Piglet
The remaining Hundred Acre Wood characters—Christopher Robin, Eeyore, Kanga, and Roo—are yet to be verified.
What Will Be the Plot of the Upcoming Movie?
With no official summary for Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, we don’t really know what the film is about at this point. Winnie and Piglet appear to be donning these masks as killers in a series of photographs.
It’s described as “A horror version of the legendary narrative of Winnie the Poo” on the film’s IMDB website. Whatever it ends up being, you should keep an eye out for this one. Winnie the Pooh using a hammer isn’t something you see every day.
After Tigger, the entire Winnie-the-Pooh universe became public domain on January 1st, allowing anyone to work on their own “original iterations of Pooh” and use them in “any of your creative work,” including films, musicals, and plays. This includes Jennifer Jenkins’s Center for the Study of the Public Domain at Duke University.
Is It a Disney Film?
No, there isn’t. Direct-to-VOD horror films like “The Legend of Jack and Jill” and “The Curse of Humpty Dumpty” are made by British production company Jagged Edge Productions.
There are a number of titles based on public domain characters in the latter two titles, which could explain where the concept for the film came from. This year marks the 96th anniversary of the first Winnie the Pooh book and its accompanying EH Shepard pictures, making them no longer protected by copyright.
It is, nevertheless, protected by copyright for the Disney version. A comic sketch by artist Lukey McGarry went viral on Twitter, pointing out that “My character, Pooh, is still owned by Disney… Nevertheless, I am free to dress wherever I choose, as long as it is not a little red shirt.”
Are you hoping for a Tigger-inspired man-tiger hybrid in a Blood and Honey sequel? It will be a long before he enters the public domain, as he originally appeared in the companion novel The House at Pooh Corner in 1928.
