Since their wedding in August 2008, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have continued to inspire people with their love story.
After meeting at a party in 2000, the twosome didn’t become more than just acquaintances until 2004. After meeting on the red carpet awards presentation, de Rossi felt comfortable enough to come out to the public as gay.
This is definitely one of the prettiest partnerships ever between Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, and it’s still increasing steadily! Below is a timeline of the couple’s relationship, including how they met when they married, and the difficulties they’ve endured.
Relationship Timeline
Check out how they first met and how their relationship is going on.
Meeting for the First Time (2000)
Portia told Oprah during one of their first appearances together in 2009 that she knew she loved Ellen the moment she laid eyes on her at a party in 2000 and that she was in love with her. Due to the fact that Portia was not yet openly gay, she did not act on her impulses.
Over three years later, she revealed that it had taken her “a long time” to tell Ellen how she felt. As far as I can remember, I’ve never felt that type of connection with anyone else in my life.” As far as Portia’s comments go, “So there you go,” she once said.
How They Reunited (2004)
Even though it took Portia some time to feel comfortable telling Ellen about the connection she felt, the two reunited in 2004 for VH1’s Big in ’04 Awards. Their relationship took off from there.
“Portia understands me completely. In our vows, she recited a quote — ‘It is good to be loved. It is profound to be understood’ — and to me, that’s everything.
What ‘I love you’ really means is ‘I understand you,’ and she loves me for everything that I am,” the talk show host gushed to Good Housekeeping in 2017. She supports me and makes me happy.”

How It Is Like to Be Gay? (2005)
During the HBO Golden Globe Awards party in 2005, the couple made their first public appearance together. Toward the end of the year, Portia gave an interview to The Advocate about what it was like to be a gay woman in Hollywood.
The first time she publicly discussed her sexuality and her relationship with Ellen, she said, “Believe me, I had a very, very long and tough struggle with [my] sexuality”.
I didn’t make the decision to become a lesbian or a homosexual woman, but I did make the decision whether or not to do so.” Even more so as a lesbian actor. There are a lot of women in the world who aren’t gay, so the majority of my characters will not be gay. “
As part of a People cover story, the couple discussed how they moved into a two-bedroom property in Los Angeles later in the year.
When Ellen told People magazine that she felt “It’s the first time that I’ve known in every cell of my being that I’m with somebody for the rest of my life,”.
Finally Married (2008)
As of 2008, same-sex marriage was made lawful in California by the Supreme Court. It was at this point that Portia and Ellen decided to make their relationship official by getting married in a small ceremony.
When Wayne Dyer officiated at the wedding on Ellen’s Instagram account as an officiant at the event, he noted that “Today we have taken a giant step forward toward the ideal that all of us, with no exceptions, are not only created equal, but we each have the unalienable right to pursue our own happiness,” according to the post.
Many who have gone before you, who were forced to live their lives in quiet desperation lurking in the shadows, are reminded by your exchange of vows today that we as humans are actually better than we used to be.
Legal Changes in Name (2010)
Entertainment Weekly reported at the time that Portia had changed her name to Portia Lee DeGeneres in 2010. Portia de Rossi, on the other hand, continues to go by her stage name.
Marital Issues (2013)
Portia and Ellen, like every other married pair, have had their share of difficulties. Reports surfaced in 2013 that the pair were having relationship difficulties. Ellen, on the other hand, was quick to dispel the rumors.
“There’s not one ounce of truth to any of it. I am very happily married. The only thing we ever argue about is who loves who more, it really is true,” she said.
