Three Thousand Years of Longing Release Date: How Did the Movie Perform at Cannes?

Over the course of more than fifty years in the profession, Australian filmmaker George Miller has had a very eventful career. With the nonstop post-apocalyptic action of the Mad Max trilogy, he almost invented an entire genre, establishing himself as one of the most distinctive and powerful voices in film.

Then he went on a family-friendly sabbatical with the films Babe: Pig in the City and the two Happy Feet movies. Critics and fans agree that Mad Max: Fury Road is not just the best picture in the franchise, but also one of the greatest action films ever created.

Miller is still involved in the Mad Max universe, having confirmed a sequel to Fury Road and a prequel to Imperator Furiosa, but his next film will be his first original premise since Happy Feet. Three Thousand Years of Longing is the writer/passion director’s project, which he has apparently desired to create for the past two decades.

Three Thousand Years of Longing

Following the publication of the mystery fantasy drama’s trailer and its recent presentation at the renowned Cannes Film Festival, here is everything we know about Three Thousand Years of Longing.

Who Performs in Three Thousand Years of Longing?

Alithea, the scholar who discovers the genie, is portrayed by Tilda Swinton in the lead role of Three Thousand Years of Longing. The Academy Award-winning actress has been repeatedly lauded for her transforming performances.

Idris Elba, whose role as the Djinn will surely play a pivotal role in the plot, will co-star alongside her as the film’s co-lead. Similar to Swinton, Elba has portrayed a wide variety of characters throughout the years, including an inspiring military leader in Pacific Rim and an unpleasant warlord in Beasts of No Nation.

What Can We Expect in Three Thousand Years of Longing?

While the trailer focuses more on the film’s bizarre aesthetics than on story details, it does at least present the basic plot premise in a straightforward manner.

Based on the short novel The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye by A.S. Byatt, the main plot revolves around Alithea, a haughty, rational English scholar. Alithea used to be married, but now she leads a somewhat lonely existence, with the most thrill she experiences being when she travels to Istanbul to attend a business conference.

There, she discovers a vial that she is immediately captivated by.

Alithea learns that a genie resides in the bottle after a fast voyage back to England and a gentle rub of the vial, but when she is informed that she has three wishes, she is not as enthusiastic as one might expect. Instead, she is curious and apprehensive, wanting to know how the “wish-making” process works and the possible hazards this could pose to her life, given that so many of these stories end up being “cautionary tales.”

Before she eventually decides to grant a wish, the Djinn attempts to overcome her reluctance by revealing visions of his past and the life-altering effects of his incredible abilities.

Three Thousand Years of Longing: Release Date

Miller’s picture will not be available to the general public until the end of the summer, despite its Cannes debut.

Three Thousand Years of Longing will be released on August 31 in the United States. It is unknown whether this date will be the same for other regions, such as the United Kingdom. We will add this information to this page when it becomes available.

As previously indicated, it has been seven years since Miller’s last film, but such intervals are typical for the director. Throughout his career, he has taken between five and eight years between films. However, they are frequently worth the wait.

How Did the Movie Perform at Cannes?

Of all the dizzying scenes that fill the screen and dazzle the eyes in George Miller’s deliciously eccentric “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” the most shocking is also, without a question, the banalest: a man in a tuxedo walking down the street. It is the four-inch piece of fabric that actress Tilda Swinton drapes over her nose and mouth when riding a city bus.

Miller’s fanciful world, populated by Djinns, magic wishes, and men who transform into 10,000 scarabs after transforming into evil ghouls, is evidently also a planet shaken by COVID.

This tension between escapism and the dreariness we frequently seek to escape lies at the core of the mad scientist Miller’s latest experiment, which premiered to plaudits on Friday at the Cannes Film Festival. Like “Mad Max: Fury Road” before it, “Three Thousand Years of Longing” is a blockbuster that attempts to set an example, a high-budget fantasy that contends there are more innovative and original ways for Hollywood to use its instruments.
