Get Ready to Step in to Near-future Society! See When Spiderhead Will Be Released on Netflix?
Absneti (Chris Hemsworth) jests, “Beautiful people get away with too much, I say that having benefited myself from time to time,” This humor reminds me of Deadpool, and I can only hope that these arrogant comments continue throughout.
Based on George Saunders’ 2010 New Yorker short story Escape from Spiderhead, this film examines issues of free will and the veracity of emotions as prisoners undergo medication trials with mind-altering side effects.
In the upcoming psychological thriller Spiderhead, Chris Hemsworth portrays a smart and quirky tech visionary driving the invention of a new type of prison that commutes sentences for a mind-altering drug trial. The genre-bending and darkly humorous film will soon be available on Netflix.
What Is the Storyline of the Spiderhead Movie?
Spiderhead depicts a near-future society in which criminals are offered the opportunity to volunteer as medical subjects in order to avoid harsh jail sentences.
Subject to scientist Steve Abnesti’s experiments, convicted criminal Jeff (Miles Teller) is given mind-altering chemicals that induce feelings of profound love (akin to when Ron Weasley momentarily falls in love with Romilda Vane in Harry Potter, but more intense, shall we say).
Abnesti may believe his work would save lives, but ulterior motives lurk beneath the surface. The plot twists when Jeff meets another prisoner, Rachel (Jurnee Smollett), and the two begin to revolt against their master.
Here’s the official Netflix plot summary:
In a state-of-the-art penitentiary run by brilliant visionary Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth), inmates wear a surgically attached device that administers dosages of mind-altering drugs in exchange for commuted sentences. There are no bars, no cells, or orange jumpsuits.
In Spiderhead, incarcerated volunteers are free to be themselves. Until they’re not. At times, they’re a better version. Need to lighten up? There’s a drug for that. At a loss for words? There’s a drug for that, too. But when two subjects, Jeff (Miles Teller) and Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett), form a connection, their path to redemption takes a twistier turn, as Abnesti’s experiments start to push the limits of free will altogether.

Who Will Be the Cast in the Spiderhead Movie?
In addition to showcasing Australia’s magnificent landscapes, the film also gifted us with another lovely Australian: Chris Hemsworth. Hemsworth is as gorgeous as ever, dressed casually and wearing round, wide spectacles, defying the cliché of a clumsy, awkward, insane scientist in a lab coat.
Miles Teller, star of The Spectacular Now, portrays Jeff, Absneti’s guinea pig. Together with another inmate Rachel, portrayed by Jurnee Smollett, previously seen in Eve’s Bayou, the duo works to uncover the truth.
Abnesti distributes experimental medications to prisoners under supervised conditions in an effort to transform the human condition. The trailer depicts him as coolly manipulating the psychological and emotional states of his captive test subjects at his hidden laboratory.
Jeff, a key participant in Spiderhead’s experimental operations, is portrayed by Miles Teller. During his time in the Spiderhead prison, Jeff forms close relationships with both Abnesti and Rachel, another inmate.
Rachel is another inmate tortured by Steve Abnesti’s life-altering experiments. With a long variety of credits and appearances, 2020 was Smollett’s breakthrough year.
