Timothy Busfield (born June 12, 1957) is an American actor and filmmaker. He got a Primetime Emmy Award for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1991. He has played Elliot Weston on the television series thirtysomething, Mark, Ray Kinsella’s (Kevin Costner) brother-in-law in Field of Dreams, and Danny Concannon on The West Wing. He is also the founder of Theatre for Children, non-profit arts organization.
Early Life
Timothy Busfield was born in Lansing, Michigan, on June 12, 1957. Timothy attended East Lansing High School and grew up with sisters Julia and Terry and brother Buck. Jean, his mother, was a secretary, and Roger, his father, was a theatre professor. Busfield attended Middle Tennessee State University to study acting after graduating in 1975, and he frequently traveled with the Actors Theater of Louisville.
At 18, he appeared in his first commercial theatrical performance, a children’s interpretation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” In 1981, Timothy relocated to New York City and immediately starred in a Ring Repertory Company production of Making a few changes Wilson’s “Talley and Son.”

Busfield made his cinematic debut as a soldier in “Stripes” in 1981, then moved to Los Angeles in 1983 to play Mark Potter on ABC’s “Reggie.” In the 1984 and 1987 films “Revenge of the Nerds” and “Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise,” he played Arnold Poindexter, and from 1984 to 1986, he played Trapper John McIntyre’s son on the CBS sitcom “Trapper John, M.D.”

In 1988, Busfield married Jennifer Merwin, a fashion designer, and the couple had two children together: Daisy and Samuel. They separated in 2008. In 2013, Timothy married actress Melissa Gilbert in Howell, Michigan, where they lived until 2018, when they moved to New York City.
During the 2016–17 academic year, Busfield was a Michigan State University artist in residence.
