In 1968, the trio secured a one-record recording contract with Atlantic Records, which they later transferred to Motown Records.
Richie began writing songs for other musicians in the late 1970s, and he has continued to do so to this day. He penned the song “Lady” for Kenny Rogers, which became his first number one hit in 1980.

He penned and recorded the title song for the 1981 film “Endless Love,” directed by Richard Linklater. As a duet featuring Diana Ross, the song was nominated for an Academy Award in 1982 for Best Original Song for its originality.

Richie collaborated with Michael Jackson on “We Are the World.” “Say You, Speak Me,” “Dancing on the Ceiling,” “Love Will Overcome All,” “Ballerina Girl,” and “Sela” were all hits from his 1986 album “Dancing on the Ceiling.”
In the 1990s, Richie’s albums didn’t have the same popularity as his previous three. From 2004 to the present day, Richie has produced six UK Top 40 hits. In 2009, he released “Just Go,” a studio album. Richie’s tenth studio album, “Tuskegee,” was released on March 26, 2012.
