Plot of Deadliest Catch
A series of documentaries following the high-seas exploits of Alaskan crab fishermen. This is by far the most dangerous career in the entire planet.
During two of the most hazardous seasons for crab fishing, the show follows the crews of eight to ten different crab fishing vessels. Aside from the crew members on the decks of these vessels, the Discovery Channel camera crews shooting them face the same dangers as the rest of the crew.
One or two crew members are featured in each episode’s side storylines, which are based on their personal histories and the activities they engage in. There is a lot of emphasis on the captains of the fleet and their interactions with their crews throughout the episodes.
Rescue crews from the U.S. Coast Guard stationed at Integrated Support Command Kodiak and their outpost on St. Paul Island, near the northern end of the crab fishing grounds, are often shown performing their own dangerous work: saving crew members from the Bering Sea’s harsh conditions.
What’s new in Season 18
For the previous 17 years, The Futon Critic claims that the Deadliest Catch captains have had to contend with large waves, “strong rivalries,” and difficult quotas. Despite this, Season 18’s challenges are unmatched.
The Alaskan government has cancelled the red crab season for the first time in 25 years. All of the captains are now in a bind.
First, Captain Sig Hansen returns to Norway, where he was born and raised. It’s time for the captain of the F/V Northwestern to set sail for Norway in pursuit of red king crab. It’s not going to be a cakewalk. In the Hansens’ land, he does not bring his famous boat.
After that, Sig has to start from the ground up by building a fishing craft out of an old Coast Guard ship and learning where the crabs live in the Barents Sea, which he knows nothing about. Finally, he needs to find a trustworthy crew of fishermen.
