Regé-Jean Page’s decision not to reprise his role as Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, in Bridgerton Season 2 devastated fans. Given that the new season is focused on a new love story, his character’s departure was barely noted by fans. The period drama is based on the Julia Quinn novel series, with the first book focusing on Daphne and Simon’s developing and complicated love relationship. Daphne desired to meet and fall in love with a decent husband, whilst Simon desired everything but marriage in light of his late father.
Regardless, they become buddies in an elaborate scheme to improve their social rankings. Their chemistry develops into love along the road. Even though Regé-Jean Page became a breakout sensation as a result of the Netflix series, he confirmed that he and his character would not return for Bridgerton Season 2.
The actor explained to Variety how the producers pitched him on his character and tale. “This is a one-season story. It will have a beginning, a middle, and a finish — give us a year,” Page explained. His character Simon Basset was never intended to have a key role in Bridgerton Season 2.

Daphne and Simon had a baby boy after Bridgerton. Bridgerton Season 2 did an excellent job of including elements of the Duke and explaining why he is not included. Daphne arrives at the Bridgerton estate in her carriage in the second season’s opening scenes.
Fans quickly discover that this is for the magnificent day Eloise has been dreading; her debut as a bachelorette ready to enter the marriage market. However, Daphne arrives alone and quickly explains her husband’s absence. Daphne explains, “I left my husband and child at home for this,” as she is concerned that Eloise has not emerged from her room and as she is running late.
It’s a simple approach to explain the actor’s and character’s absence. Daphne later comes to the country house with her son Augie in tow. Fans are still treated to a glimpse of the Duke, although a more adorable one.
Daphne struggles to make sense of Anthony’s intention to marry Edwina Sharma in Bridgerton Season 2, Episode 4. She recognizes that he does not fully understand or love her. Anthony diverts attention in the scene by stating that he misses the Duke, and Daphne becomes meddling in his absence.
Is the character ever going to make a comeback in the ‘Bridgerton’ series?
Bridgerton’s creator and executive producer have stated that each season will center on a different Bridgerton sibling and book. Is it truly difficult for Simon to return to the screen with other stories to tell? Fans have reason to hope, as the character appears throughout the remainder of the book series.
According to Variety, Chris Van Dusen’s exit does not exclude Simon and Page from returning. “I will never rule out Regé’s comeback. He is not returning for season two. “Who knows what the future holds,” Van Dusen explained of season three. Shonda Rhimes even asserts that the Duke will never truly disappear, as fans may binge-watch the first season. She expresses her thoughts and expresses her delight at the prospect of working with Page again.
