Fans of Narcos, rejoice. If three seasons of the original series followed by two seasons of the Mexico variant did not completely satisfy your appetite for the show’s drug-fueled narrative, Narcos: Mexico season 3 is almost certain to provide you with a new dose of suspense shortly. While Netflix has not confirmed the release of a new season, there are reasons to believe that showrunner Eric Newman will continue the drama.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in February about the upcoming second season of Narcos: Mexico (which will premiere on Netflix on February 13, 2020), Newman expressed confidence in the series’ continuation. Additionally, the second season finale appeared to be deliberately setting the stage for the third season of Narcos.

When Will Narcos: Mexico Season 3 Be Released?
While there is no confirmed date for the season 3 premiere, we can anticipate a release in 2022. There were 15 months of anticipation between the premiere of the first season on November 16, 2018, and the premiere of the second season on February 13, 2020. If the same amount of time passes until the debut of the third season, we could predict a May 2021 release at the earliest. For those familiar with Hispanic productions — from telenovelas to award-winning films — Diego Luna’s name is ubiquitous, which may be reason enough to jump on the Narcos: Mexico bandwagon. Not only did the 40-year-old Mexican actor, producer, and director-star in the show’s first two adrenaline-fueled seasons, but he also participated in the critically acclaimed Pedro Almodóvar film Y Tu Mamá También (2001) and the Academy Award-winning Frida (2001). (2002). While Luna’s character, drug kingpin Miguel ngel Félix Gallardo, is undoubtedly in trouble by the end of Narcos: Mexico season 2, we expect to see him return in season 3.
It’s worth mentioning that if Gallardo does not find a way out, there is plenty of room for new individuals to take the helm of outside drug operations. Several other characters, notably Rafael “Rafa” Caro Quintero (Tenoch Huerta), Ernesto “Don Neto” Fonseca Carrillo (Joaquin Cosio), and Isabella Bautista, are imprisoned alongside Gallardo (Teresa Ruiz). In a recent interview with Refinery29, Luna hinted at Gallardo’s possible return. “He’s in jail, and there are jails in Mexico that double as offices, allowing you to continue operating. Simply open the news. […] Thus, being ‘in jail’ does not always imply that you are out of business.”
However, Eric Newman revealed to THR that the character Gallardo may have reached the end of his narrative. “That is how you make a living in these endeavors — you continue doing them for as long as you can,” Newman explained. “However, I believe [this is our farewell to that character]. Diego [Luna] is about to embark on a journey to a galaxy far, far away! He will always be with us in spirit, and working with him over the last two years has been an extraordinary privilege. He is my hero.”
What Do We Know About the Narcos: Mexico Season 3 Plot?
Narcos: Mexico delves into the origins of the modern drug war, which began with a loose and fragmented coalition of independent producers and dealers in Mexico. In the 1980s, Félix Gallardo pioneered the concept of traffickers banding together to form an empire with his Guadalajara Cartel. His activities run against those of DEA agents Kiki Camarena (Michael Pea) and Walt Breslin (Scoot McNairy).
The most recent series concluded with a violent confrontation between Breslin and Gallardo following the latter’s arrest. El Chapo de Sinaloa (Alejandro Edda), Amado Carrillo Fuentes de Juarez (José Mara Yazpik), and Benjamn Felix de Tijuana (Alfonso Dosal) are supposed to be the next season’s bosses in a potential new season set in the ’90s. Breslin’s attention, we believe, will turn to lead DEA forces against these new “threats.”
