Derry Girls Season 3-Penelope’s other show is well known to diehard Bridgerton fans. Nicola Coughlin, who plays Penelope Featherington in the period drama, also appears in Channel 4’s Derry Girls. Two seasons (or series, as they are known across the pond) of the award-winning show are currently accessible on Netflix, however, the third series has been postponed owing to the COVID-19 outbreak. Coughlin, thankfully, revealed on Twitter that the third season of Derry Girls will begin filming this year.
Derry Girls, as the title suggests, is set in the Northern Irish city of Derry near the conclusion of the Troubles. The titular girls are a Catholic school clique made up of pals Erin, Clare, and Michelle, as well as Erin’s cousin Orla and Michelle’s English cousin James. The five “girls” deal with fame, religion, first love, and a lot of embarrassment. The show has received numerous screenwriting and comedy awards, as well as nominations for multiple BAFTAs. Almost as importantly, the show’s snippets have become popular TikTok sounds.
When Will Derry Girls Season 3 Premiere?
Although Derry Girls season 3 will begin filming in 2021, no official debut date has been determined.
According to RTE, Nicola Coughlin stated that the show has been halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic preventing filming in Derry. “We’re still waiting because filming in Derry is critical to the show,” she explained. As eager as people are to see a new season, Coughlin is itching to begin production. On Twitter, she stated that she “Cannae bloody wait,” even though production has been delayed “many times” due to the epidemic.
Coughlin is currently developing not one, but two series. Netflix confirmed that production on Bridgerton season 2 will begin this spring. The second season will almost certainly be based on Julia Quinn’s second novel, The Viscount Who Loved Me. Penelope Featherington, a character created by Coughlin, is the protagonist of the fourth novel in the Bridgerton series, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton.
Who Is a Part of the Derry Girls Season 3 Cast?
According to Cosmopolitan UK, all of the girls will return for series 3. Saoirse-Monica Jackson will reprise her role as Erin, Coughlin will reprise her role as Clare, Louisa Harland will reprise her role as the spacey Orla, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell will reprise her role as Michelle, and Dylan Llewellyn will reprise his role as James. Sister Michael, played by Siobhán McSweeney, is also set to return.
Lisa McGee, the creator of Derry Girls, told the Radio Times that she would love to have comedian Dara Briain make an appearance in the future series. Briain hosts the long-running British panel show Mock the Week and appears on The Big Fat Quiz regularly. He has expressed his admiration for Derry Girls on social media, praising Saoirse-Monica Jackson’s performance in particular.
Other possible guest stars or cameo appearances are unknown at the moment, but we’ll be sure to update this story as information becomes available.
What Is the Plot of Season Three of Derry Girls?
Coughlin stated on Twitter that “the plots in this series are the greatest we’ve ever done,” but did not elaborate. She spoke to the Belfast Times about the production difficulties encountered during season 3’s production and highlighted the storylines. “[W]e are unable to do anything with a crowd at the moment, which makes logistics extremely difficult. However, I recently spoke with Lisa McGee, who walked me through the narratives. They’re so wonderful, which is unsurprising given her incredible talent, but it made me want to do it immediately.”
The program strikes a delicate balance between acknowledging the highly charged society in which the children live and maintaining a generally cheerful tone. The Troubles, the war between those who wanted Northern Ireland to join the Republic of Ireland and those who wanted to remain in the United Kingdom, frequently serve as a background hum of violence for the Derry Girls’ character rather than defining their life. Apart from that historical context, little is known about the season 3 plot.
