Euphoria Season 2, Episode 1 Recap & Everything You Need to Know!

After a long hiatus, HBO’s Euphoria has returned for its second season, with a dramatic introduction to Fez’s grandmother, a violent, drug-dealing matriarch who rescued Fez from his abusive father and raised him the only way she knew how.

Grandma Fez boldly approaches the sleaziest of strip clubs, strolling past greasy patrons ogling strippers, until she reaches the establishment’s owner, Fez’s father, who is enjoying an act of fellatio, only to be brutally stopped by two flesh-piercing bullets.

Grandma Fez rushes off with little Fez, teaching him the ropes of the (drug) trade in the process, eventually picking up a younger sibling, Ashtray, whose mother abandoned him as collateral and never returned.

Despite being surrounded by immorality and misery, Grandma Fez appears to love the boys in her way, and the two brothers build a close friendship.

Fast forward to today, and Ashtray, in an act of brotherly love, murders Fez’s highly violent drug dealer and his acquaintance with a hammer. As a result, Fez, Ash, and Rue go to the dealer above the slain dealer to figure out a new agreement.

Surprisingly, the drug dealer scenes in Euphoria are so over-the-top, almost like Grand Theft Auto cutscenes, that they come across as a little goofy. To verify that no one is wearing a wire, the gang is forced to strip naked at the demand of a roided-out, permanently enraged thug, while the head honcho, Laurie, a former schoolteacher, determines whether or not she can trust them.

Rue appears to have found the experience exhilarating once they make it back to their car unhurt; the pounding adrenaline feels almost as wonderful to her as getting high. Rue also got her hands on a small box of heroin, though she doesn’t appear to be interested in injecting herself just yet.

‘Secret Identity,’ a new thriller, investigates how working in the comics industry may be deadly.

Rue swiftly sniffs out some cocaine at a house party, uniting with another intoxicant fanatic, Elliott, and having a minor overdose, only to be comforted by Adderall, the chemicals in her body melting into a stable combination, somehow.

When Maddie, Kat, and Jules arrive at the party, Lexi informs them that she is unable to locate her sister, Cassie and that she is becoming concerned. Cassie, it turns out, is already at the party, having been discovered at a gas station by hulking sociopath Nate, who offered to take her there.

As Nate guzzles an enormous amount of beer and progressively increases his speed, to a life-threatening degree, while Cassie alternates between feeling genuinely unsafe and turned on, the brief, simple moment inside Nate’s car feels tenser than all previous drug-dealing sequences combined.

Maddie bangs on the bathroom door, desperate to urinate, startling Cassie, who doesn’t want to be caught having sex with Maddie’s abusive ex, being her best friend and all.

Maddie’s knocks become increasingly frantic as she loudly “accuses” Nate of taking a poo as if human bodily functions should cease to exist during house parties.

Maddie is the killer at the door, threatening bloodshed if she breaks in and uncovers the juicy treachery, much like a slasher flick.

In a desperate attempt to save face, Nate persuades Cassie to lie flat in the bath and closes the shower curtain, allowing Maddie to enter without being noticed. Cassie is forced to remain in the bathtub as Maddie politely accepts some flirtation from Travis, a suave, confident partygoer equipped with a powerful joint, who has tossed a urine-soaked towel in her face.

Cassie is finally discovered by Travis after her phone vibrates, swamped with calls from her worried sister, but Maddie doesn’t care; she doesn’t care about a drunk girl in the bathtub – her only goal is to dance with Travis and, maybe, make Nate envious.

She succeeds – Nate is enraged, insecure, and anxious to possess both Maddie and Cassie, who are now bursting with drink and testosterone.

Nate nervously presses McKay for filthy details about what he did when alone with Cassie in the bedroom after Cassie and McKay debate the state of their relationship (and both agree that it is ended).

Nate vibrates with dread, every drunken breath seemingly edging closer to violence – he’s a fantastic villain, always harboring a blazing, overwhelming rage that only occasionally erupts.

Meanwhile, Fez and Lexi have formed an unexpected relationship as they recognize one other as outsiders in this party of glittery attention-seekers. Lexi is impressed enough to take Fez’s phone number, but something more pressing quickly catches his attention.

Last season, Nate anonymously phoned the cops on Fez, causing the soft-spoken dealer a lot of difficulties. Fez, on the other hand, isn’t quite the teddy bear he appears to be, and the opening sequence with Grandma Fez foreshadows a violent act of revenge, as Fez pretends to make up with Nate just to beat him senseless the moment he lets his guard down.

Rue has reconciled with Jules and stated that she relapsed the instant Jules left her, much to Lexi’s chagrin. The two kiss in beautiful, golden light, and it’s unclear whether the romance is genuine or a particularly terrible, drug-induced illusion.

Hopefully, Nate recovers from his wounds – he’s far too formidable an opponent to be killed off – we’ll find out the implications of this most eventful house party in the next episode.

The reappearance of Euphoria is just as vivid, gorgeously photographed, and delightfully tasteless as the first season, which was drenched in sex, violence, and pretty lighting; it’s good to have it back.
