Season 3 of ‘the Oa’: Everything We Know!

The Oa Season 3-The OA, a Netflix sci-fi collaboration between Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, has evolved into one of the most bizarre and wonderful shows on television today. Its first season appeared out of nowhere in late 2016 as if from another realm,

and its eagerly awaited second season premiered in spring 2019 to even more Reddit deep dives and lavish praise. (For starters, it’s the finest TV programme of 2019 so far, as well as Netflix’s best original series, and it’s on our list of 2019 sci-fi shows to watch.)

While The OA is completely insane, chronicling the multi-dimensional journey of a formerly blind woman named Prairie (played by Marling) who meets telepathic octopuses, talking trees, and rhythmic dancers along the way, it leaves fans thirsty for answers to all of the mind-boggling questions it raises.

Not only are we at Thrillist wondering where Prairie, Homer, Dr Hap, and essentially everyone else is in the multiverse, but we’re also curious about Season 3’s condition. Find out everything there is to know about The OA: Part III so far in the section below. (Warning: there are spoilers ahead.)

Is there going to be a third season of The OA?

Unfortunately, The OA: Part III will not be released, at least not on Netflix. The streaming service started in August 2019 and the series would be cancelled after only two seasons. Netflix’s head of originals, Cindy Holland, said in a statement, “We are very proud of The OA’s 16 enthralling chapters,

and we are thankful to Brit and Zal for sharing their bold vision and bringing it to life via their tremendous talent… We hope to collaborate with them again in the future, in this and possibly many other areas.”

While The OA fans organised on-site protests and hunger strikes in the aftermath of the cancellation, Variety reported in late August that the creators had no plans to extend the series, even if it were capped off with a movie.

The showrunners explored it but finally determined that a movie’s timeframe wouldn’t allow for a satisfactory end to a five-season plot arc. Given that Netflix was a producer of the show, it appears that The OA is gone, as another network will be unable to pick it up without long talks.

Brit Marling even addressed her goodbyes to the programme in a lengthy Instagram post, thanking her devoted fans for their efforts to salvage it while stating that the show will only exist “within [of] us” in the future. As a result, it’s probably time for us to say our final goodbyes as well. Isn’t it???

What was the reason for the cancellation of The OA?

While Netflix does not share viewership figures, and the cancellation came among other Netflix original series cancellations, like Tuca & Bertie, it’s an intriguing move, given that The OA was slated to be a five-season series. Holland told IndieWire in July 2018, even before Season 2, that the show was originally conceived as a multi-season project with Netflix on board. “She stated,” she said “The OA is incredible…

We were incredibly pleased from the start when Brit [Marling] and Zal [Batmanglij] pitched us a five-season arc.” Jason Isaacs, who played the villain, is one of the most well-known actors in Hollywood. In a recent interview with us in March 2019, Dr Hap repeated this plan. So, it appears that Netflix was no longer as enthusiastic and chose to put the plans on hold.

What would have been the plot of Season 3 of The OA?

What could have happened in hypothetical future seasons of The OA has an infinite number of possibilities. The series’ conclusion after only two chapters came as a shock to the showrunners, who were looking forward to starting production on Season 3, so there’s always the possibility that they’ll revisit the series in the future,

perhaps even in the distant future, a la Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life or Twin Peaks: The Return. If Season 3 were to happen, here are some ideas on where it might go:

Season 2 has arrived in the multiverse, and we’re right in the thick of it! Few could have predicted where the second season would go, even though ardent fans speculated a lot about it. As a result, it’s difficult to predict where Season 3 will go.

Prairie would almost certainly keep trying to defeat the terrible Dr Hap while simultaneously travelling with him and Homer since she discovered the three of them are a “cosmic family.” All three realities we’ve visited thus far, I

including the meta-Brit-Marling-the-actress world from the final chapter, appear to be linked or referenced to in some way, so these will probably be the places of significance they constantly return to.

The Oa Season 3 (2)

Apart from that, we can expect it to be even more perplexing than prior chapters. According to Ben-Adir, who spoke to RadioTimes, “I already know where it’s heading in the next season, and it’s going to be NUTS! To put it another way, it’s unthinkable! Genuinely! I’m not trying to sell it in any way—insane!… it’s You think it’ll go there, but then it’ll go there We’re prepared to perform the moves, so hopefully one day we’ll be able to visit this dimension!

What exactly is YCFM?

The OA’s last words to Homer in Season 2 were “You come to find me,” hence YCFM stands for “You come to find me.” In May 2021, Batmanglij posted four images to his Instagram account—one entirely yellow, a second entirely blue (or cyan), a third that said only “f.” and a fourth that was entirely magenta,

and the initials of those four posts could be construed as YCFM—and the Reddit theories quickly followed, mostly speculating that they referred to a potential announcement regarding The OA Season 3—and the Reddit theories quickly followed, mostly special

What is Retreat, Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij’s upcoming FX show?

Retreat, a new limited series “that follows an amateur sleuth as she seeks to investigate a murder at a quiet retreat,” was commissioned by FX on August 13 and will be written and directed by Marling and Batmanglij, as well as executive-produced by them and Andrea Sperling. “Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij have created a gripping storey that updates the classic mystery genre with a bold new character for our times,” said Gina Balian, FX Networks’ president of original programming.

The Oa Season 3 (3)

What will the theme of Retreat be?

The series is described as follows in the official FX announcement: “Retreat is a mystery series with a new type of investigator at the helm: Darby Hart, a Gen Z amateur sleuth. Darby and 11 other guests are invited to a Retreat at a secluded and dazzling spot by a reclusive billionaire. When one of the other guests is found dead, Darby must battle a flood of competing interests to prove it was murder before the culprit kills another life.”

Who will be among the Retreat cast?

So far, the only actor who has been confirmed to be on the project is Brit Marling, who will play “a pivotal role.” We’re pretty sure this means she’ll play a reclusive billionaire rather than a Gen Z amateur sleuth, but stranger things have happened in Marling-Batmanglij projects. There haven’t been any further casting announcements yet, but we’ll post them here as soon as they are.

Is there a link between Retreat and The OA?

No, is the brief and almost certainly correct response. For a variety of reasons, this is quite unlikely. But it hasn’t stopped OA aficionados from speculating that it is. How does Retreat connect to The OA? Retreat, according to one meta hypothesis, is the show that the OA (as “Brit”) and Hap (as “Jason Isaacs“) are filming in The OA’s closing scene. Allow yourself to fantasise. Bottom line: Even if the new FX limited series won’t be The OA Season 3, we’re looking forward to riding along with Marling and Batmanglij on the expected wild journey when Retreat premieres.
