College students, including those at the University of Wyoming, have to contend with classes, a weaker job market and another old, familiar foe—parking.
“I probably paid more in parking than for my tuition,” UW student, Tanya Salih, said.
The sentiment that convenient parking is hard to find around UW is not new and overwhelming among students. According to UW’s Parking and Transportation Master Plan, 80 percent of students they surveyed said they had moderate to high difficulty finding a parking spot near campus.

The survey also warned that with parking spaces getting removed to be used for building sites, the demand for parking will get worse.
However, not everyone has the same outlook regarding finding parking spots. The same survey said 60 percent of the faculty and staff said parking is easily to very easily found.
Students did not hold similarly kind views when asked. Salih, a business administration major, said parking is a continual hassle for her at UW. She said her vehicle was booted at the beginning of the year after she parked near the Fine Arts Building at 9 p.m. She said the sign forbidding parking in that area was not put in a good area to warn people.
Salih said she did not like the idea of UW profiting from parking violations. Marcela Means, a UW biology major, said only academics should be a source of revenue for the university.
For the 2011 fiscal year, parking citations yielded $300,246, according to Paul Kunkel, manager of Transit and Parking services at UW. Kunkel said the revenue is used to maintain parking lots and the UW Transit System. He said next year the money will be used to fund the Safe Ride Program.
Both Salih and Means said the university should be a little more lenient with parking violations. Salih said it is too difficult to get tickets waived. She accrued $300 in tickets, and could not get any removed, she said. Salih also said for some reason tickets from her parent’s car transferred over to her car, a different vehicle.
Means brought up other issues.
“If you pay $124 for a parking permit, you should be guaranteed a space,” she said. She said meter access is another problem and wanted a longer time limit than the two-hour maximum the parking meters have. City permit zones further complicate parking matters, Means said. She said thanks to those zones it is a good thing to have the shuttle.
Similar to most college campuses, close parking at UW will be an issue, Kunkel said. He said the transit system is a good supplement to available parking. Kunkel said students could use the shuttle lots at 30th and Willet and 15th and Spring Creek. He said the shuttle gives 3,000 rides a day.
The new parking lot near Ivinson is nearly complete, according to Kunkel. He also said a parking lot near the new Fine Arts building is in early planning stages. Kunkel said that while not too many parking lots are in planning, the transit system will keep expanding to keep up with the demand.
