Student asks for ‘just a little respect’

Aretha had it right; all we need around here, especially as of late, is “respect, just a little bit.”  Between the arguing over the ASUW smoking recommendation and the attacking of a certain senator who, like all of us, made a mistake by not thinking before speaking, some people have taken everything a step too far in proving his or her points.

I will not discuss my opinions on either of these issues because that is not the reason I am writing this. What I would like to say is that we are starting to lose the concept of respect.

I wholeheartedly encourage the expressing of one’s opinions and views, but do so with taste.  There are effective ways of getting your opinion across without personally attacking someone or, for that matter, making yourself look somewhat like a fool.

There are and will always be someone who doesn’t agree with how you see things, but they have the right to have different views. Maybe it’s my hippy heart that makes me wonder why we all can’t put aside our differences and, at the least respect, one another.
